Travel on a city break that gives you the best of both worlds. From exploring Tromsø's cultural centre to journeying into its breathtaking natural surroundings for unforgettable Aurora hunts. Tromsø may be a vibrant and bustling city but its position 350km above the Arctic Circle makes this a city break with a big difference. Not only are you surrounded by stunning nature in the form of steep mountains and dramatic fjords but come nightfall, you're also in the heart of the Aurora Zone. Though the city is renowned for being able to observe this awe-inspiring natural wonder, we want your search for the Northern Lights to be memorable. That's why we have filled your itinerary with two dedicated activities to get you out of the bright lights and on an unforgettable Aurora chase. One evening will be spent on board a boat in the dark fjords surrounding Tromsø - an ideal and peaceful way to hunt for the Lights. On another evening, you will visit a local reindeer or husky camp (depending on departure date). At both camps, you will not only use the dark skies to look out for a potential display, but you'll also gain a unique insight into the lives of the animals and enjoy a traditional evening meal. We have left your days free to tailor however you please. Tromsø's city centre most certainly has all the attractions, vibrant cafes and restaurants to keep you entertained. Alternatively, you could add to your winter adventure with a dog sledding experience or a cruise through the nearby fjords to spot an array of Arctic wildlife. See our personalise tab for more details. Though Tromsø is a modern city, nature plays a big role. Being surrounded by such stunning natural landscape, there is a big commitment here to preserve this beauty as well as the local culture and reducing the negative impacts associated with tourism. There are few places left in the world that offer such an ideal mix of exciting city life with natural wonders. Tromsø gives you both, including the majestic Northern Lights right on its doorstep.   Image credits: Gaute Bruvik & Visitnorway.com, Baard Loeken and NordNorge, Credit Tromso Villmarkscamp, Ole C Salomonsen, Gaute Bruvik and NordNorge & Knut Hansvold and NordNorge

During this fully-escorted tour, you will immerse yourself in the unrivalled landscapes of northern Finland during this 5-night trip, staying at two unique wilderness hotels. Located deep in dark-sky territory, this guided tour begins with three nights at Wilderness Hotel Juutua, which is located in the small village of Inari. The area has been of huge significance for the indigenous Sámi people for centuries. With its abundance of tradition and local culture, this destination provides a restorative escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. For your final two nights of the tour, you will stay in a glass-roofed Aurora Cabin at Wilderness Hotel Muotka, nestled amongst the trees and with fantastic views of the night sky. Both properties are much loved for their endearing hospitality, Nordic décor and brilliant guides. This region of northern Finland boasts a Northern Lights track record that approaches or surpasses other popular Arctic destinations, and it is a fantastic place to enjoy evenings stargazing with minimal light pollution and beautifully dark skies. Your Escorted Tour Guides   Dan Monk  Dan Monk is the Director of the Gillian Dickinson Astro-Imaging Academy at Kielder Observatory in Northumberland. He has always been fascinated by the night sky and constellations. One Christmas, he received a telescope and would gaze into the sky from his back garden at every opportunity. Growing up in Sunderland, Dan's visibility of the night sky was limited by light-pollution from the city, but his passion continued to develop and through his teen years, he invested in more advanced telescopes. Visiting Kielder Observatory was a significant moment for Dan as he relished in the undisturbed dark skies of western Northumberland. After volunteering at the observatory, Dan became a full-time member of the team and began his dream role.   Most recently, Dan has developed a keen interest in astrophotography and a hunger to capture an image of the perfect night sky. Dan was recently interviewed by Dan Walker on Channel 5 news to discuss the recent Northern Lights sightings in the UK. Dedicated to his field, he insisted he would have to do a pre-record as he didn't want to miss any further sightings that evening.   We are delighted to have Dan's passion and expertise for what promise to be truly memorable escorted tours through Northern Finland. Matt Robinson Matt Robinson will be our other tour guide for our escorted tours. Matt, also worked at the Kielder Observatory with Dan as well as hailing from the hotbed of astronomy talent that is Sunderland.  Matt's first experience in astronomy was in 1997, when his uncle showed him Comet Hale Bopp through some binoculars and since then he hasn't looked back.   After a wonderful 18 months at Kielder Observatory, Matt was given opportunities to work in astronomy in other parts of the world. These opportunities have allowed him to live in the Arctic Circle in Finland and Norway under the spectacular Aurora Borealis. Matt has also spent time in the Maldives where he worked as an astronomer in an Instagram famous hotel, and even to Chile where he covered an unforgettable total solar eclipse.  Matt is now based in Gothenburg, Sweden as our astronomy expert and tour guide. Dan Pye Dan Pye is Director of Astronomy and Science Communication at Kielder Observatory.  When he left school, he moved on to study TV and Film production and then Theatrical Studies at University, but Astronomy and Star Gazing was always embedded as a strong hobby. During his 20s he spent some time in retail, and broadcasting then moved on to opening a Cafe in Durham, which centred around scientific themes. He visited the Observatory around 10 times before volunteering, and after a few months became part of the full time team, and what a journey it has become. Dan's primary specialities are Observational Astronomy, Astrophotography, and Meteorites. When he's not star gazing, he likes to make sure the kit is functioning correctly, producing video content, making improvements, or testing the boundaries of technology to bring more exhibits to the Observatory. We're thrilled to have Dan on board for this astronomy tour, using his expertise in astronomy and astronomy photography to guide you though your dream trip.  About Kielder ObservatoryKielder Observatory is one of the most remarkable places to visit in the whole of the UK. A public astronomical observatory which is second to none, under some of the darkest skies in the world where you'll find "infinite inspiration" and wonders you could never have imagined! Kielder Observatory is a public outreach astronomical facility located in Kielder Forest, in some of the darkest skies in Europe and the third largest protected Dark Sky reserve in the world. Located in Northumberland, England. It is situated just half a mile from the Scottish border on Black Fell near James Turrell's Kielder Skyspace. The site was chosen as one of the locations in the UK which has the least amount of intrusive light pollution. The primary function of the observatory is outreach via public events. The goal being to bring in members of the public of all ages from school children in primary school, and upward. The aim being to engage in discussions and observations of the Universe. We to do this in a way that is friendly, informative and interesting, through our amazing team of astronomers, guest speakers and volunteers. The observatory hosts upwards of 40 of these amazing events every month, designed for members of the public. Since its opening in 2008, the observatory has played host to tens of thousands of people to observe and engage with the night sky, via talks, activities and telescope observing sessions.

Saariselkä, surrounded by stunning wilderness, has a fantastic Northern Lights record. At the Northern Lights Village, you'll spend every night in a glass-roofed Aurora Cabin where you can see nature's greatest show from the comfort of your bed. Autumn in Finland also brings vibrant colours and a range of activities for you to choose from. Saariselkä is nestled amidst the fells and forests of North Eastern Finland, high above the Arctic Circle. It is a prime location for Aurora activity and the Northern Lights Village offers the ingenious glass-roofed and cosy, Aurora Cabins, which is separated from the town by thick forest. Unlike other destinations where Aurora accommodation may only be for a single night, here, you get to spend the whole of your holiday in one of the cabins. The tailor-made aspect of the holiday ensures that you can maximise your potential for spotting the Aurora by choosing Aurora activities, such as an adventure to the prime viewpoint at Paatsjoki Bridge. In addition, we also offer a range of daytime activities that allows you to explore the autumn landscape and delve deeper into the culture of Lapland. Autumn is a particularly special time to visit the Arctic. September is the peak of the Finnish "Ruska", a local term referring to the changing colours of the leaves. The landscapes are bathed in vibrant shades of orange and brown, but as you approach November, you may experience the first snows of winter. There is an assortment of activities available that focus on exploring the autumn landscapes. The Urho Kekkonen National Park showcases the very best of the Finnish "Ruska". The pine forest and isolated fells are highlighted by the colours of autumn and the park is home to an abundance of birdlife. A day trip to Inari includes a relaxing drive along the shores of Lake Inari, combined with a visit to the Sámi Siida Museum which provides a fascinating insight into the indigenous Sámi culture. A particular highlight in Saariselka is an interesting and rewarding trip to the Tankavaara Gold Village, which is said to be the only international museum in the world displaying the past and present of gold panning and prospecting. After a tour of the museum, you can try your hand at searching for gold. Anything you discover is yours to keep, so search hard enough and you may find your fortune in Lapland. To conclude, this tailor-made holiday is ideal for Aurora seekers who want to potentially experience delightful displays, whilst enjoying the tranquil autumn terrain. The prospect of spending the entirety of your holiday in an Aurora Cabin ensures that you are able to maximise your potential for spotting this natural phenomenon and the daytime activities offer insight into all aspects of Lapland.

The special locations surrounding the gigantic Lake Inari are renowned for their pristine environments and Northern Lights track records. Many of our Artisan Travel Experts got their first experience of Finland's impressive wilderness in these areas and have since returned with their loved ones for many more adventures. Inari and Nangu both offer unspoiled winter scenes, superb lookouts over frozen Lake Inari and brilliant Arctic and Aurora experiences, but they each have their charm which you will discover during your seven-night break. Your first four nights will be spent in Inari, just outside the small village which is the heart of Sámi culture. Situated in Saariselkä, Finland, the Northern Lights Village puts you in prime Aurora viewing territory. This makes your 4-night stay in a glass-roofed Aurora Cabin even more exciting. What's more, you'll go on dedicated Northern Lights hunts and enjoy unforgettable daytime experiences such as dog-sledding. Saariselkä is ideally located at the edge of a winter wilderness in the far north of Finland. It is approximately 250km above the Arctic Circle which means that it is a prime location for Aurora hunters. Although the fresh Arctic air can be quite tiring, you will find yourself fighting to stay awake, attempting to seek out flickers of green in the sky above your bed. Don't worry if you fall asleep though, as you can make use of the Aurora alert system in your cabin which will sound if the Northern Lights are showing! Perhaps one of the most sought-after souvenirs from any Aurora holiday is a photograph of the lights. An initial Aurora workshop will reveal the secrets necessary for capturing the lights, introducing the settings required for producing the best pictures. You'll then set out to hunt the lights on two nights, enjoying time at an Aurora Camp and then going on a snowshoe hike. In addition to hunting the Northern Lights, this holiday includes some of our favourite winter activities. A session combining snowmobiling and ice fishing ensures that you are able to enjoy a popular Finnish pastime whilst also experiencing the thrill of snowmobiling. You will also enjoy a 10 km husky safari. When not planning on how to sneak a husky home, you shall take to the trails for an unforgettable adventure with the dogs. Living this far north of the Arctic Circle is extremely challenging given the harsh winters, but the indigenous Sámi people have thrived here for generations, many as reindeer herders. This holiday provides an insight into their culture, including a visit to the reindeer paddock for a sleigh ride. This four-night itinerary is designed to maximise your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, whilst also introducing you to the fascinating culture north of the Arctic Circle.
