Day 1 - Flights, arrival and introduction
On arrival at Ivalo Airport you will be greeted by your guide and transferred to your accommodation at Nellim for dinner and a good night’s sleep (Aurora permitting!) in preparation for the days ahead.
Day 2 - Aurora workshop, Nellim by snowmobile sleigh and Northern Lights search
There’s nobody better equipped to hunt down the Northern Lights than somebody who lives and works in the Aurora Zone. The local guides seem to have been born with a sense of where and when to find the Aurora Borealis. Equipped with today’s scientific forecasts, they are THE people to help you find the Northern Lights.
Hence, proceedings commence this morning with a meeting with your guide who will take you through a few “housekeeping” issues before moving onto the important matter, the hunt for the Northern Lights.
While the Lapland night sky holds a massive fascination for one and all, it won’t have escaped your notice that daytime reveals jaw-dropping lake and forest landscapes which are just waiting to be explored.
The most efficient way to introduce you to the area is by snowmobile – pulled sleigh. Your guide will drive the sled around the local area. You will get your first glimpse of the vast wilderness and the chance to see local landmarks such as the log built church at Nellim. You will visit a local reindeer corral and have the chance for a short sleigh ride before heading to the eerie Russian border. As you approach the edge of Finland you may sense that you are being watched – this is not misplaced. Cameras watch your every move here. It is very James Bond.
After a well deserved dinner the hunt for the Aurora Borealis starts in earnest. Accompanied by your guide, you’ll jump into our heated minibus and armed with weather and Aurora forecasts head off in search of the Northern Lights.
The combination of a local guide and being mobile increases your chances of not only seeing the Aurora Borealis but also capturing a spectacular display. Nobody knows the roads and viewing points better than these guides who live here in the area. They are also keen Aurora photographers so they will be more than happy to provide tips and suggestions.
You could not be in better Aurora-hunting hands.
Day 3 - Sami Siida Museum, snowshoes and Aurora Camp
This region of Lapland is one of the best locations to experience the traditions of the Sami culture which remains an integral part of many lives in the area. Today you will be driven on the stunning drive to Inari where you will get the chance to visit the Siida Museum. The interactive displays and interpretations here will give you an understanding of the history of the area, the lives of the people who live here and the strong culture that still exists today. There is also a short photographic presentation on the Aurora for visitors to enjoy.
After your time in Inari you will enjoy a gentle snowshoe walk. Your guide will lead you on an easy trail. This is a wonderful way to connect with the environment and get a sense for the wilderness that surrounds you – it can also be great fun!
This evening your Aurora pursuit continues. This time, you’ll be travelling in a snowmobile-pulled sled to one of Nellim’s Aurora camps.
These camps all have views to the North with completely unobstructed or light polluted views of the night sky. They are an Aurora viewer’s dream location with the added bonus of a warm fire so you can warm yourself and enjoy a hot drink should it get a little nippy.
Day 4 - Husky safari and Aurora search
Here’s your chance to tick off another wish list item....dog sledding.
Your musher will introduce you to your team and provide tuition on how to drive and control the dogs and the sled.
Once the dogs get over their initial excitement for the trail they settle into a relaxed pace and the sheer joy of dog sledding becomes a reality. Nothing in the world compares to the experience of driving a team of huskies across the frozen terrain of Lapland. Seriously, it’s almost impossible to describe the feeling of spiritual wellbeing. You’ll just have to try it for yourself. Your safari will cover around 17km.
This evening sees you boarding the minibus again in the company of our Northern Lights guides in search of the Aurora. Hopefully, the “Temperamental Lady” will dance for you this evening. If anybody can find her it’s your guides so fingers crossed folks.
Day 5 - Departure
After breakfast, you’ll be driven back to Ivalo Airport to catch your flights home.
