We’re fully into the summer in the northern hemispehere and the nights are slowly getting longer. August is an exciting month for all Aurora hunters because this is when the first signtings of the new aurora season occur. In the Arctic as their short summer comes to an end, the northern lights are normally first spotted around the 2nd or 3rd week of August. Along with potential aurora sightings we have a beautiful full Moon on August 9th and one of the best meteor showers of the year, The Perseids.
Let’s take a look at what August 2025 has to offer.
Full Sturgeon Moon (August 9th)
The Full Sturgeon Moon occurs on August 9th and is the name traditionally given to the August full moon by Native American tribes, particularly those near the Great Lakes. It marked the time when sturgeon were most easily caught. This full moon is part of the seasonal cycle used to track time before modern calendars. In 2025, the Sturgeon Moon will be visible in the evening sky, offering a bright and clear view for skywatchers across the globe.

Perseid Meteor Shower Peak (August 12–13)
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most anticipated events in the astronomy calendar. It will be most active on the nights of August 11th and 12th. The shower occurs when Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Under dark, clear skies, observers can expect up to 100 meteors per hour. The meteors radiate from the constellation Perseus, hence the name. This year, minimal moonlight will improve viewing conditions. To enjoy the display, find a dark spot, lie back, and look up—no telescopes or binoculars needed.

Venus and Jupiter Close Conjunction (August 10–14)
In the early hours of August 10th – 14th, Venus and Jupiter will appear very close in the early morning sky, getting their closest on the 12th. Venus and Jupiter are the brightest planets in our night sky so this promises to be a fun event to observe, even better if you have a telescope which will help you see the moons of Jupiter in the same view as Venus. They wil be visible in the hours after midnight until sunrise on each day.
