Hunt the Northern Lights, experience dog sledding, enjoy a thrilling snowmobile safari through the Finnish wilderness and take a special visit to a reindeer farm, as you head to Finnish Lapland for the ultimate festive long weekend. You can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in Jeris, an exemplary base for your short break Aurora adventure.

The run-up to Christmas is the perfect time to visit Lapland and this three-night break is packed full of unforgettable experiences and amazing activities.

Based at Hotel Jeris, an enchanting forest retreat, cosy winter cottages are the perfect refuge after a day filled with outdoor winter activities, each cottage equipped with a log fire and private sauna.

As this is prime Northern Lights territory, you can head outside of your accommodation each night for a chance to see the Auroras dancing overhead.

Dive straight into Finnish tradition with a visit to a Reindeer Farm to learn about the way of life for a reindeer herder, and the importance of reindeer in Finnish culture. You'll have the opportunity to try a short reindeer pulled sleigh ride, before enjoying lunch served in the ice restaurant (weather permitting).

An exciting dog sledding experience continues the theme of animals in the arctic, and this is just the first day!

Explore further afield during a thrilling snowmobile safari on day three, followed by a serene evening snowshoe walk. Keep warm by a wilderness campfire whilst on the watch for the Northern Lights.

You'll also have the chance to visit the renowned Arctic Sauna World for an evening of blissful relaxation and, if you're feeling brave, an exhilarating ice dip in Lake Jerisjärvi.

This itinerary offers a mix of traditional Lapland experiences, exciting outdoor adventures, and opportunities to witness the beauty of the Northern Lights. It's a fantastic way to make the most of the festive season and create cherished memories.

Upon arrival at Kittila Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver before being transferred to your accommodation. Located high above the Arctic in the far northwest corner of Finland, the backdrop here is a stunning array of forest-covered fells and frozen lakes.

Your traditional winter cottage awaits you at Jeris and dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant.

Today is all about the animals of the Arctic. After breakfast in the hotel, you will meet your guide for a short transfer to a local reindeer farm.

Reindeer are fundamental to the region, holding great traditional and economic importance and herding is still an essential part of the way of life here. A herder will take you through the skills and customs of herding and answer any questions you may have about the animals. You will also enjoy a short ride on a reindeer-pulled sleigh through the forest.

Lunch is included and, weather conditions permitting, you will head to the nearby Winter Village for lunch in the ice restaurant. If conditions mean the ice restaurant is unavailable then you’ll dine in a cosy wooden kota (traditional tipi) around an open fire, or at the hotel’s restaurant.

In the afternoon, you will head to a nearby husky farm where the sled dogs will be eagerly awaiting your arrival. Full driving instructions and a safety briefing will be given by your musher before setting off on your short but exciting safari. You will travel two per sled and will cover around 6km in total.

This evening you will?have the chance to?enjoy a traditional Finnish pastime in?the Arctic?Elements?Sauna World.?The spa offers?saunas based on each of the elements as well as?wellness showers, relaxation areas and even?an?ice hole swimming area,?for those?feeling brave!

Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant, complete with some local specialities so you really will get a ‘taste’ of Lapland.

Jeris Lakeside Resort

Hotel Jeris occupies an enviable location which is 20 kilometres from the nearest village and is located directly on the shores of Lake Jerisjärvi. It is this remote position that makes the hotel an enchanting forest retreat.

The hotel is owned and run by the Pietikäinen family, who also manage the neighbouring sister hotels of Harriniva, Kittila and Torassieppi.

Their hotels are some of our most popular accommodation options in Finland, having received high praise for their knowledgeable guides and exciting activity options.

The hotel consists of a central building and 32 winter cottages in the adjacent forest.

Hotel facilities

  • Your meals will be served in the hotel restaurant, which offers a rustic menu of traditional and local Finnish dishes. Meals are served buffet-style with one or two options for each course. Guests can enjoy local delicacies, such as salmon and reindeer. The hearty food here is ideal for setting you up for your adventures in the snow.
  • There is a small lounge area where guests can relax in the evening and take advantage of the hotel’s free Wi-Fi.
  • Tea and coffee are available free of charge throughout the day in the hotel restaurant/bar area.
  • A significant feature of Hotel Jeris is the wonderful Arctic Elements Lakeside Spa. Renovated for winter 2019/20, the spa is the first of its kind in Finland, with strong eco-credentials, thanks to its use of entirely renewable electricity and geothermal heating generated from the Jerisjärvi lake. There are four saunas here each inspired by an element; earth, fire, water and air and each named after Finnish gods and goddesses. Included are a traditional smoke sauna and plenty of areas for relaxation. Spa area entry is included in the majority of our trips (see what’s included for details), but if not you can book entry via the reception for a daily fee. For the Aurora enthusiasts, there is also an upgrade option to the special Northern Lights sauna which offers panoramic views of the night sky. If conditions are favourable, this could be one of the most relaxing ways to see this fantastic light display. For the brave (and healthy) you can complete your sauna experience with a dip in the ice pool – a Finnish tradition.
  • A small selection of souvenirs is available for guests to purchase (including postcards and local handicrafts and snacks) in the reception area.
