Situated on the shores of frozen Lake Inari, Wilderness Hotel Inari offers an exceptional base for a tailored winter holiday in search of the Northern Lights.
The vast expanse of the frozen lake is effectively one big playground by day and an ideal Aurora viewing platform by night. Our tailor-made holiday allows you to determine exactly which activities you want to include, how long you wish to stay in this winter wonderland, and when you want to travel. It offers total flexibility and is ideal if you are travelling with a group of people who may want to try different things, working to a budget (big or small) or if you have been to the region before and know what you would like to focus on this time around.
There's a great range of snow-based activities here which will allow you to explore the Arctic's wilderness in unforgettable ways. From riding across a frozen lake on a snowmobile to mushing with a team of dogs along snowy trails, visiting a reindeer farm or snowshoeing in the wintery forest, there is so much to do.
At night, the emphasis here falls very much on the Northern Lights. This is the heart of Aurora hunting territory and we offer several dedicated Northern Lights activities to give you the best chance of seeing the incredible display. These are memorable ways to venture into the Arctic night in search of our planet's greatest light show. You can explore on foot, by car or snowmobile, or travel to a remote wilderness camp.
The ice on the surface of Lake Inari also provides an exceptional viewpoint within metres of the accommodation, should the lights appear when you are at the hotel.
There is also the opportunity to explore the village of Inari - the capital of Sámi heritage and culture in Finland. It is around a 30 to 40-minute walk to the village from the hotel.

| Situated on Lake Inari’s shores, Wilderness Hotel Inari is one of the most spectacular destinations we feature. Offering excellent levels of comfort and some serious ‘wow factor’, it is the latest addition to the Wilderness Hotels owned by our good friends Jouko and Mari Lappalianen. Importantly it is also slap, bang in the middle of the world’s best Aurora hunting territory and the hotel has implemented some innovative Northern Lights features to help maximise your viewing potential. Wilderness Hotel Inari is ideally located around 40 minutes’ drive from Ivalo Airport and just five minutes from Inari Village, which is the centre of Sámi culture in Finland. There is a variety of accommodation on offer here, including cabins, Aurora cabins and hotel rooms, all of which are separate to (but within very easy reach of), the central restaurant building. Double/Twin Wilderness Room
The bedrooms are located in two separate buildings around 50 metres from the main building.
Each room has been decorated in a traditional Arctic style with inspiration taken from the local environment. They are around 30m² and have either a queen-sized bed or twin beds. Coffee and tea making facilities are provided in your room as well as either a comfortable sofa or two armchairs. If you can’t face being detached from the “real world”, the rooms also come with free Wi-Fi. Every bedroom is en-suite and comes complete with hairdryer and toiletries.
These rooms are designed for two people to share but a third person can be accommodated on a camp bed or pull-out sofa (supplements apply).
Log Cabin
These cosy cabins are built in the traditional way, with walls constructed from huge logs. The ground floor covers 70m² and the loft area offers an additional 20m².
On the ground floor, you’ll find a spacious dining/living room, comfy seating, and a wood burning stove which can be turned to face where you are sitting. There is also a kitchenette and dining area, although all your meals are provided in the restaurant. The main bedroom with a queen-sized bed can also be found on the ground floor. The cabins also provide free Wi-Fi although the signal is not strong in all of them. It can, however, be used in the lounge area of the main building if needed.
The bathroom and toilet (hairdryer and toiletries are provided) are also on the ground floor and the cabin comes with the luxury of a private sauna.
The loft area upstairs can accommodate three more single beds and, thanks to the pull-out sofa in the living area, the capacity of these cabins ranges from two to six people (although we would recommend a maximum of 4 adults). They are ideal for couples looking for a very romantic hideaway or for small groups of friends or family.
The cabins are between 15m and 100m from the main building.

Arctic Chalet
These semi-detached, designer Arctic Chalets, are a fantastic addition to Inari’s range of accommodation options. They are designed to offer couples or families an air of Arctic luxury in their own holiday hideaway.
The modern interiors are sleek and beautifully designed. Each features a bedroom with an en-suite shower, private sauna room and king-size bed. The separate living area is well equipped with a cosy sofa, an electric fire and small kitchenette – they are very cosy and perfect to relax in following a day of adventures.
The lounge sofa can also convert into a (very comfy!) bed which can sleep an additional two people, the chalets are a much more spacious option than the standard hotel rooms and just a short walk from the main restaurant building.

Aurora Cabin
With the potential of seeing the Northern Lights above, you won’t want to take your eyes off the Arctic sky. Luckily, with Wilderness Hotel Inari’s Aurora Cabins, you won’t have to. These amazing structures are all equipped with an expansive heated glass roof to give you unobstructed views of the northern skies at all times.
These cosy cabins come with twin beds (which are typically pushed together), a sofa or armchairs in the small living area and an ensuite shower room (toiletries and hairdryer are provided). You will also have coffee and tea making facilities. Some of the cabins will also accommodate an extra person on a sofa bed. The cabins are 34m² in size. The Wi-Fi signal isn’t as strong in the cabins so you may need to use the main restaurant or use the time to switch off!
The cabins are between 20 and 50 metres from the main building.

Personalise This Tour
This relaxing Northern Lights hunt is perfect for those wanting to kick back whilst still enhancing their chances of spotting the Aurora.
Your excursion will begin in a sled as your guide pulls you over the open space of Lake Inari on his or her snowmobile. Hopefully, the Northern Lights will be shimmering above you making the journey an unforgettable one. If they do not make an appearance, the Arctic sky alone is enough to keep you occupied as the clarity of the stars here is awe-inspiring in itself.
Duration: 2.5 hours
During this activity, your guides will use their local knowledge and the Aurora and weather forecasts to lead you to a prime Northern Lights viewpoint.
If local conditions are good, a specific Aurora camp will be selected, and you can spend more time trying to capture the lights on camera.
If the weather is less promising close to the hotel, you will travel further in search of clear skies.
Your guide will impart some of their extensive knowledge and you will enjoy an evening out in the wilds, hopefully gazing at the Northern Lights.
Duration: approximately 3 hours
Searching for the Northern Lights by snowmobile is great fun as the landscape takes on a totally different atmosphere after darkness falls. The machines provide you with the mobility to hopefully evade any localised cloud cover and your guide will lead you to the best possible location for a potential sighting of the Northern Lights.
You will travel two people per snowmobile throughout and there will be the chance to swap drivers (the driver must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence).
Duration: approximately 2.5 hours
This Northern Lights excursion offers a peaceful yet active hunt through the surrounding nature, as you strap on your snowshoes and tread over thick blankets of snow beneath the dark Arctic sky.
Your guide will lead the way to an Aurora viewpoint, passing pine trees thick with snow and the hushed wilderness of the forest as you walk. You will then come to your camp spot, where you will warm up with hot beverages and gaze at the sky in the hope of catching the Northern Lights. If they make an appearance, you will all watch and admire them as they dance and move above you.
Duration: approximately 2.5 hours
This traditional Finnish sport is definitely worth experiencing during your time in Inari. So, strap on your skis and prepare to travel like a local.
Your guide will give you instructions and no prior experience of any form of skiing is required. Once you have mastered the basics, you will set out for a trip on the trails close to the hotel.
Duration: approximately 2 hours
This activity is a gentle introduction for complete beginners to a popular activity in Finnish Lapland. Your guide will give you full tuition and help you fit your snowshoes before you head out to explore around the hotel along a trail which really shows how remote this hotel is. There is something really special about exploring the pristine winter wilderness under your own steam before heading back to the hotel for a well-deserved rest in the cosy lounge area.

Dog sledding is effectively a ‘must-do’ activity whilst in Lapland and we can highly recommend this excellent adventure.
Your expert guide will provide you with full instruction and a safety briefing regarding how to handle the sled before you meet with the dogs.
You will hear the huskies long before you will see them as they will be so excited to get on the trail. You will be allocated a team of dogs between two, with one person driving and one riding in the sled (there will be the chance to swap during the trip).
The anchor is then released and the eager animals will set off, pulling you at speed along the trails, which typically follow a circuit on magnificent Lake Inari. On your return, there will be time for some photos.
Duration: approximately 3 hours in total (including transfer).
This trip is a great way to spend a leisurely day in the wilderness, trying one of the most popular local hobbies – ice fishing.
To get to the ideal fishing spot, you will hop into a sleigh pulled by your guide’s snowmobile and can enjoy the views as you travel along the snow-covered trails. When you’ve reached your destination, you will drill holes in the thick ice, drop your lines and wait patiently for a nibble on the line.
Regardless of whether you land a catch, this is a lovely way to spend time in the wilds of Lapland and enjoy The Great Outdoors.
Your guide will prepare a warming lunch and hot drinks around a campfire, and who knows, you might be supplementing the meal with fresh fish.

This is the ideal activity for those who want to explore further afield and want the thrill of speeding across the landscape on snowmobiles (full instruction is of course provided).
After a safety briefing and snowmobile driving lesson, your guide will lead you out onto the ice of Lake Inari, which is a snowmobiling paradise. Travelling two people per machine with the opportunity to swap drivers (you may wish to upgrade to have single snowmobiles for this activity, please contact our Aurora Travel Experts for a quote), you will enjoy the thrill of the trails as you take in the wilderness around you.
During the trip, you will break for lunch around an open fire, which is a wonderful experience and an excellent addition to your day.
Please note: you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile.
Duration: approximately 4 hours including lunch
Enjoy a snowmobile safari in the surrounding wilderness.
Your guide will familiarise you with the snowmobile and its controls (there really aren’t many), providing a full safety briefing with instructions. It will then be time to set off, two people per snowmobile, on a guided excursion, typically following trails across Lake Inari.
The distance you cover will depend on the group, but the activity will last for around two hours in total and you will have the opportunity to swap drivers halfway.

Today you will leave the hotel behind and head off with your guide for a wonderful few hours, exploring the wilderness on foot with the use of snowshoes
Your guide will show you how to strap the snowshoes over your boots, before leading the way on a trail into the nearby snow-laden forest. As you walk, you can simply enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with a landscape that is buried in thick, sound-stifling snow. You may see some Arctic wildlife along the way, or animal tracks in the snow, while your guide tells you about the surrounding landscape.
Your efforts will be rewarded with lunch around an open campfire along the way.
Duration: approximately 4 hours
During this 1 hour workshop the guide will provide an overview of the science behind the Northern Lights and guidance as to the best way of photographing this bucket list experience.
If you are interested in photography and have your own camera you will be advised about the optimum settings needed to best capture spectacular Northern Lights images.
Please note: you will need to bring your own equipment (camera, ideally SLR, and tripod)
Duration: approximately 1 hour in total
Today you will gain an insight into the traditions of Sámi culture, the lives of a herder and the importance of the reindeer to a rural economy such as Inari when you visit a local reindeer farm (by car). During your visit, you can ask the herder questions about the way of life this far north of the Arctic Circle.
There may be the opportunity to upgrade this activity in resort to include short reindeer pulled sleigh ride. This is on request only and subject to availability, please speak to a member of the reception team on arrival.

The Sámi are the indigenous people of Lapland and Inari is at the heart of Sámi culture in Finland.
During this traditional Lappish dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to learn all about this fascinating way of life with a presentation from a local Sámi person, who will show you their traditional dress.
You will then enjoy an upgraded evening meal which includes traditional Lappish delicacies and local foods.
This activity requires a minimum of 4 people to operate.
