TAILOR YOUR TRIP

A selection of winter activities can be added to your trip at additional cost. Once you have chosen when you want to travel and for how long (we recommend a minimum stay of three nights) you can select as many or as few activities as you wish from the extensive range on the “Activities” tab and tailor your trip as required. All activities are individually priced and our Travel Experts can assist you with your selection and will then provide a personalised itinerary quotation for you.

The Northern Lights Village is the latest in Finland’s increasingly diverse selection of Aurora-friendly accommodation. Unlike many destinations where you spend just one night in an Aurora cabin, here it’s for the entire duration of your stay. Essentially, you go to bed under the stars and, with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights, but in the comfort of a warm and cosy glass-roofed cabin.

There are 80 such cabins at the Northern Lights Village which is situated just 1000 metres from the amenities in the centre of Saariselkä. The cabins are cleverly protected from the lights of Saariselkä's more distant ski centre. Being in the very heart of the Auroral Zone, the chances of watching the lights whilst lying in bed are really rather good. Wouldn’t that be a story to tell when you get home?

Essentially, these tailor-made Northern Lights holidays have it all: Aurora cabins, easy access to downhill ski slopes and an extensive range of winter activities which can be tailored to suit your requirements.

After selecting your preferred holiday duration (a minimum of three nights is required) you choose the activities that best suit you. Lapland’s gently rolling fells and snowy forests are just waiting to be explored and our team of experts are just a phone call away if you need any advice about how best to go about it.

There are dog sledding and snowmobile safaris of various lengths so you can choose whether you want a taster or a longer adventure. If you prefer to delve into local traditions then we offer introductions to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Reindeer are synonymous with this part of the world and meeting a herder and enjoying a gentle reindeer-pulled sleigh ride is another “must-do” activity here in Finnish Lapland.

What’s more, the majority of activities begin at the Northern Lights Village so you’ll waste no time with transfers to activity start points.

Saariselkä also has 15 downhill ski slopes and is renowned for its network of cross-country ski trails so there really is an activity here for everybody.

After darkness falls, it’s time to get out in search of the Aurora and you can also choose your preferred means of tracking down “the elusive lady”. There are remote Aurora Camp excursions, snowshoe hikes, minibus hunts and snowmobile adventures, all of which are led by expert local guides who will do all they can to help you witness an Auroral display.

Our friend Markku, whose vision created the Northern Lights Village, is an Aurora nut. He lives and breathes the Northern Lights and is rarely happier than when he is capturing them on camera.

If you’ve got all the kit, then your guides will help you to capture the lights on your own camera. The guides usually take some pictures as well and if they do, you can buy them to take home as a souvenir (extra costs may apply).

For a flexible Aurora hunting holiday, staying in dedicated Northern Lights accommodation, then there are very few places which can surpass the Northern Lights Village.

The Specifics

Holiday group size (approximate)

This holiday requires a minimum of 1 person to run, however, on some dates we require a minimum of 10 people for our flight allocation. Maximum 30 people (approximately). Please speak to our Travel Experts for further information.

Group Size

We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.

Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.

Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate

Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.

Minimum and maximum age

If a specific minimum age applies to this holiday, it can be found in the Key Facts box on the holiday Overview page.

Unless otherwise stated in the Key Facts box on the holiday Overview page, the minimum age for participation in an Aurora Zone holiday is typically 12 years old (there may be younger children in some destinations who have booked with other companies). If an adult-only environment is important to you, then please contact our Travel Experts and they will advise on the best dates and destinations for you. If you are looking for a holiday designed specifically for families then please see our sister company www.activitiesabroad.com.

Itinerary amendments

The order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final and detailed itinerary will be provided either with your final travel documents (which are uploaded into your online account around a week prior to departure) or upon arrival.

Medical History and Advice

We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.

In order to give us the best possible chance to do this, we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.

In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.

Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.

Insurance

Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.

It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.

If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.

Booking Activities Locally

Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).

When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.

In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are properly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.

Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.

The UK Foreign Office Advice

Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice

We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.

The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/

New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade https://www.mfat.govt.nz/

Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html

If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.

If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.

If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.

If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.

Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation

On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.

Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.

Booking your own flights - cancellation disclaimer

If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.

If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.

Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

Saariselkä Northern Lights Village

Nights: 1-3

Located in North East Finland, the Northern Lights Village sits on the outskirts of the ski resort of Saariselkä. Tucked away from the town and separated from it by dense forest, the location is ideal for viewing the Northern Lights but is still within walking distance (around 1000m) of the town’s amenities. The ski slopes can be accessed via a shuttle (small charge applies) or a pleasant walk of around 40-50 minutes.

The Northern Lights Village offers accommodation in Aurora Cabins which are half-roofed with glass. The twin or double beds are situated beneath the panoramic roof and provide the chance to view the Northern Lights from your bed! It’s not often that folk prefer a sleepless night but here it’s not considered to be a huge inconvenience as it provides the chance to potentially witness Mother Nature’s greatest light show!

There are 80 cabins in total, all of which are within a 5-10 minutes walk of the Village’s central facilities which include the restaurant where you’ll enjoy breakfast and dinner.

Facilities

  • The Village restaurant is an atmospheric place, inspired by traditional wooden kotas (Finnish teepees). Breakfast is a buffet of continental options and some hot dishes. Evening meals are a buffet with starters of soups and salad, a choice of local meat or fish will follow (the reindeer and white fish in this region are delicious!). Typically a cake will be served for pudding, keeping you well-fuelled for your nocturnal Aurora hunting adventures. Dietary requirements are all well-catered for as long as we are informed at the time of booking. There’s also a large lobby near reception for you to relax in after your meal.
  • The Northern Lights Village has an onsite reindeer paddock and all activities start in the village so there is no need for time-wasting transfers. Basically, because we want to make your holiday as uncomplicated as possible, life is made very easy here.
  • Saariselkä is around a 20-25 minute walk from the Northern Lights Village (40-50 minutes to the ski slopes) which means that all of the amenities, shops, cafés and local restaurants are within easy reach.
  • For all Northern Lights activities, an expert guide will provide you with photographic tuition. The guides sometimes take pictures throughout the activities which can be purchased on your return to the village, if they take any.
  • For all of your provided winter clothing, simply go to the onsite Safari House where overalls, gloves, boots, skis and snowshoes are stored for easy access.
  • Guests can pay extra to use the hot tub, sauna and ice pool.

Aurora Cabins

The Aurora Cabins have a half-glass roof and all face north. The design is based on the traditional wooden kotas (teepees) of Finland.

Each cabin has twin beds (which can be made into a double). A sofa bed, suitable for an additional adult, can be added on request. There is a shower room (with underfloor heating) and a toilet, as well as a luggage storage area (please note that hot water is limited). Tea and coffee-making facilities, a hairdryer and a minibar are also included.

Importantly for duvet-based Aurora hunting, a timer switch can be used to heat the glass roof should your view be obscured by snowfall. It takes approximately 5-10 minutes to heat and melt the snow so there’s no need to go and sweep the roof in your pyjamas!

Cabins are not cleaned between arrival and departure unless requested from reception. Additionally, towels can be exchanged at reception if required.

Free Wi-Fi.

Traveller Reviews

We had an absolute wonderful time 26 December 2021 by Angela Bantock

I would just like to say thank you for all your support enabling us to visit Finland. We were very concerned about travelling due to covid and the restrictions enforced in Finland during our stay. However we had an absolute wonderful time, the hotel did everything possible to make our stay safe and very enjoyable. I can honestly say this was once of our most memorable holidays and I cannot

recommend it enough. The huskie ride, ice hole fishing, driving a snowmobile were just fantastic, but I feel being left to ourselves to walk through the woods and ski on the frozen lake were just the best. Not forgetting seeing the Northern Lights twice was a bonus. We would certainly like to book a holiday with your company again in the future.

From start to finish we were given excellent service, faultless to a tee 09 December 2021 by Danielle Bonhomme

Myself and my partner booked our holiday with the Aurora zone to celebrate our 30th Birthdays, from start to finish we were given excellent service, faultless to a tee. We sent out many queries about the holiday and the team give us swift responses, we were extremely impressed with how quick they responded . The Aurora zone also helped us with extra bookings we had requested such as the sauna and

jacuzzi, the team were always available to help and no question or request was no bother to them, an absolute five star service and the sort of customer service that you don't see very often! When we started our holiday in London the covid guidelines changed which resulted in us needing to test whilst we were way. I was so scared and worried about how we were going to get a test whilst being away, but within 20 minutes of the change in rules the Aurora zone contacted us to inform us that they would arrange for tests to be delivered to the airport for us and to focus on enjoying our holiday, this sort of service again gave us the reassurance that we could indeed enjoy our magical holiday. Upon check in there was tests waiting for us, which made the stress disappear. We are so grateful that the Aurora zone took the stress away from us so that we could enjoy Lapland, it was the most magical holiday we could have ever wished for with a surprise proposal at the end, so myself and my fiancé would like to thank the Aurora zone for best holiday and we now have the most amazing memories to look back on , we will defiantly book with Aurora zone in the future!

Will definitely be using your company again 16 January 2020 by Rebecca Hill

I really was incredibly impressed with everything, it was so professional & I have forwarded your details to a number of friends & family who are interested in booking. I will definitely be using your company again and I would perhaps like to try a smaller resort to guarantee small guest numbers or go during the summer too. I was very lucky that all of my activities were small groups

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish

Saariselkä - Northern Lights Village - Tailor Made 10 March 2019 by Stuart & Marianne McMahon

Generally, awesome trip, we saw the northern lights 2 out of the 4 nights, the second showing was fantastic and even managed to get a couple of ropey photos. The alarm as part of the package was a good idea, as this is 15 euros a night otherwise, although it does make you jump at daft o'clock in the morning. Snowmobile was by far and away the best, my wife now wants one!! Petri ?? Our guide was

brilliant, we got lucky and were the only ones on that particular trip, so he stopped a couple of extra times to point things out, including Russia?? Husky trip was brilliant although we found the 2 hour included sitting around a fire drinking hot fruit juice, which while lovely would have preferred more time with the dogs.

We had a wonderful trip 10 March 2019 by Pauline and Anthony Severs

I would highly recommend Northern Lights Village at Saariselka. The village is beautifully designed with fabulous, warm, cosy, glass roofed cabins all facing north, so you can lie in bed snug and warm and watch the greatest show on earth, and we did. The cabins are very well equipped with modern stylish furnishings and free toiletries. I would recommend requesting cabins 1-20 if you can because

they are on the northernmost perimeter facing the forest so you get no light pollution to spoil the view. You would not have this experience in a hotel. Dont forget to ask reception for an aurora alert to wake you if the aurora appears during the night. The activities are great. We tried snowmobiling, husky dog sledding, reindeer sleigh ride and nightime aurora hunt in a heated sleigh. To be honest, the heated sleigh wasn't very comfortable, or well heated, but you are only actually in it for about 20 minutes before you stop at a viewing point and have warm drinks in a sami tent while waiting for the lights to appear. We were lucky enough to see the lights on 2 out of the 4 nights we stayed so we felt blessed. I would highly recommend that you understand how to set your camera for aurora photography befopre you go otherwise you might be disappointed with the results. Luckily our guide took some great photos with his camera which you can purchase online when you get home. Another piece of advice is that if you decide to do the husky dog sledding you will be expected to drive the sled, or for couples one can drive whilst one can sit in the sled. It was great fun and the dogs seemed to really enjoy running. Dont underestimate how cold it is and remember to wear a few layers including thermals, hats and gloves at all times, and a face covering snood or balaclava is also good for cold activites. The stylish restaurant is self-service buffet style and always includes a vegatarian dish. There is also a very attractive ice bar which is a must-do before you go. The village of Saariselka is about 20 minutes walk away and has some restaurants and shops if you fancy a change.

Saariselkä - Northern Lights Village - Tailor Made 28 February 2019 by Elizabeth and Clifford Hughes

The museum visit and walk through the woods to the picnic spot. Having lunch in such an amazing location was fantastic. Our guide was brilliant! The dog sledding was fun too.

Saariselkä - Northern Lights Village - Tailor Made 21 February 2019 by Nina Martin & Jack Morris

The 20km husky safari and aurora camp were both very well run and enjoyable. The guides were knowledgeable and engaging. The description for both activities was accurate. I enjoyed that the hotel planned the aurora camp on the day were the sky was the clearest.

The overall process was very easy and very well organized. Our patrons had lots of fun, we'll try to do it next year too.

The balance of activities was good as were the accommodation and transfers 10 January 2019 by Geoffrey & Harriett Onyett

The staff at all resorts were good. We particularly liked Muotka Lodge. We enjoyed all of the activities but the highlight had to be the three sightings of the Aurora.

We had a wonderful time 27 December 2018 by Jason Catlett & Cecil Bolen

I normally plan vacations so handing over 3 days to a travel agency was a little uncomfortable for me. It worked out great. We had a wonderful time. I think it was very well put together. No complaints.

Amazing that we could see the lights from inside as well as out. 27 March 2018 by Deborah & Mark Frettingham

The husky ride was a magical trip through the woods. The dogs are obviously well looked after and it was great to steer the sleigh ourselves. An amazing place. Cabins very warm and cosy and amazing that we could see the lights from inside as well as out.

Overall very good indeed 25 March 2018 by Susan & Dixon Dilley

Overall very good indeed. All good and difficult to choose but Snow Shoe walk very interesting and informative. Excellent trip - shame about the Northern Lights! Just a little taster one night but very little of a display - will have to return!

Everything was absolutely amazing 20 March 2018 by Michelle Etheridge & Paul Neale

Everything was absolutely amazing, had the most fantastic holiday. Loved the husky safari, exhilarating, brilliant fun.

It was the perfect holiday 08 March 2018 by Wesley and Gemma Knipe

We absolutely loved everything we did. The aurora hunt was a very special trip even though we didn’t see the aurora at this time. The cross country skiing was so much fun and we were encouraged to go at our own pace through a lovely encouraging guide.

We did the reindeer sleigh ride 06 March 2018 by April and William Legge

We did the reindeer sleigh ride and loved that the guide came down the line and offered to take everyone's picture on their own phone/camera. My husband enjoyed the dog sledding the most!

Fall in love with Finland 20 February 2018 by Tina and Simon Price-Johnson

From the moment my husband and I stepped off the plane at Ivalo airport we were provided with excellent service and advice by the many staff at the Northern Lights Village, Saariselkä. Every detail of our pre-booked activities was provided, and the snowsuits were comfortable and extremely warm. I have osteoarthritis which can be affected by the cold but was not at all during the trip. The

accommodation was very clean and beautifully laid out. Lying at night under the glass roof in the cosy warmth of our cabin, watching the snow fall around the cabins and trees, was sublime. The reindeer sleigh rides were informative and made me feel I was in a film! The beauty of the village was almost unreal. Although I fell off the husky sled whilst driving, I did not hurt myself due to landing in the four feet of snow by the side of the track, and it was thrilling and such an adrenalin rush to drive I wanted to do it again straight away. We were lucky enough to be the only two for the Siida Museum trip and our guide, Yuka, was very well-informed and solicitous of our comfort. Quite simply put, there is nothing that could have been improved about our whole experience. The trip was a dream from start to finish.

The staff at the Northern Lights Village were fantastic, we could not fault them. 19 February 2018 by Kimberley Berridge and Simon Bloom

The holiday was a dream come true. We didn't see the lights but that was ok as the rest of the activities and accommodation were great fun and you almost forgot you were there to see the lights. I loved the snow mobiles, we were lucky enough to be just my partner and I with the guide and we got to stop and start as we pleased. it was fantastic. My partner loved the husky's - very enjoyable

Overall the place is amazing and we loved it. 10 January 2018 by Sarah and Rebecca Skinner

The most enjoyable trip for us was our first trip out to the Lake because we got to see the Northern Lights. Overall the place is amazing and we loved it.
