Akureyri – Northern Iceland Adventure

  • Details

Details

Hailed as Iceland’s ‘Capital of the North’, Akureyri offers a unique blend of lakes, lagoons and local culture in this exciting four-night itinerary. Although Akureyri is the biggest municipal in Northern Iceland, this compact city benefits from a short journey time from the airport and easily accessible activities, giving you optimal time to simply soak up this marvellous destination.

Kick-start your Icelandic adventure with a whale watching boat trip on Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland. Enjoy the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn, part of Iceland's magnificent 'Diamond Circle' and experience local traditions and tastes during a cultural tour.

We've included a Northern Lights Hunt to give you the very best opportunity to spot the Aurora during your stay, plus a snowshoeing activity for a peaceful morning in the wilderness. You'll also visit the Forest Lagoon geothermal spa for a spot of relaxation following your northern adventures.

Your base for this adventure is Hotel KEA, located in the heart of downtown Akureyri and within walking distance of the waterfront where you can marvel at the surrounding snowcapped mountains. Only breakfasts are included in your itinerary so that you can sample local flavours in some of the nearby eateries.

Visit Akureyri and explore the gateway to Iceland's rugged north.

After a hotel breakfast, you’ll be collected from your hotel for a highlights tour of Lake Myvatn. Today, you’ll travel through some of the most spectacular and unique landscapes in Iceland. Be sure to have your camera at the ready!

You’ll see waterfalls, lava sculptures, bubbling mud pits, underground caves, volcanoes and craters. Your expert guide will be on hand to explain the history and science of each area, answer any questions and even tell a few folklore tales about the local trolls.

After a day of sightseeing (you’ll be out for around 7 hours, including transfers), you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel ahead of tonight’s Northern Lights Hunt.

After collection from your hotel, you’ll be driven into the night in search of the Northern Lights. Heading away from light pollution, your expert guide has the local knowhow to find the prime stop off for a spot for sky gazing and, hopefully, an enthralling Aurora display if conditions are favourable. Hot drinks are included and you’ll be out for around 2.5 hours, including transfers.

Once you arrive back in the town centre, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to a charming fishing village on the west coast of Eyjaford. It’s time to step back in time as you discover age old traditions and tastes. First up is a visit to an artisan studio, where residents hand craft rugs, bowls, jewellery and more. You’ll have the opportunity to sample some local refreshments before heading to Iceland’s oldest microbrewery. You’ll be out for around 4 hours, including transfers.

Please note: This holiday is a city break and as such operates quite differently to some of our other holidays in more remote locations. Because of your central base in the city, your activities will start at various meeting points (full details and directions will be provided in your final travel documents) which you will need to walk to (or arrange your own taxi unless otherwise stated) in good time for the activity to begin. You will then normally be met by a bus which will either take you directly out on your activity or to a central meeting point from where you will then head out on your adventure.

For environmental reasons and to pass on the cost saving benefit to our clients on some of our holidays based within a city, we may also make use of scheduled shared airport shuttle buses. These will stop near your hotel but there may be a short walk (with your luggage) due to traffic restrictions.  To check what is standard within your itinerary please check the ‘what’s included’ section. We can arrange private taxi transfers if you prefer (upgrade costs will apply). Our travel experts will be happy to provide more information.
Due to the city location, the group sizes for activities and transfers will be larger than some of our other holidays. We have lots of itineraries to suit everyone. So, if you enjoy the buzz of a city and like to explore its sights and sounds in your free time, then this holiday is a great option for you. If you prefer a more remote destination with activities on site, then please ask one of our travel experts who would be very happy to make some suggestions.
