  • Cold weather clothing is provided for the duration of your stay
  • Services of our expert local guides

This holiday offers you the chance to combine incredible activities and Aurora hunting, whilst providing you with a real insight into local culture.

The village is a hugely important place within Finland’s Sámi culture, making it the ideal base from which to explore the traditions that underpin this remote corner of the world.

Inari is surrounded by the wilds of the Arctic and sits on the shores of the vast Lake Inari – an activity playground. This remote location is also at the heart of the Aurora Zone and so we have of course included dedicated Northern Lights hunts on two of your nights here, helping to maximise your chances of catching a glimpse of the spectacular natural light show.

Your holiday base will be at the Traditional Hotel Kultahovi, a Sámi owned hotel with an excellent reputation for food.

Your daytime activities are well balanced and include some unforgettable Arctic experiences. You will explore your surroundings during an exhilarating snowmobile safari, as well as trying your hand at dog sledding.

Your cultural encounters include a very special visit to meet a local lady and her reindeer at their homestead, set deep in the wilds. You shall also visit the wonderful Sámi Siida Museum, just a short walk from the hotel.

Your evening pursuits will be dedicated to seeking out the Aurora and hopefully witnessing a spectacular display.

Whether travelling on foot during your snowshoe hunt or sitting back and relaxing during the reindeer-pulled sleigh ride, your guides on all the evening activities will utilise their local knowledge to give you the best possible chance of seeing an Aurora display. Of course, your location already boasts a great Northern Lights track record, and if conditions are favourable, you don’t need to walk more than a couple of minutes from the hotel to witness a display in all its glory.

  • Upon arrival at Ivalo Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to the Traditional Hotel Kultahovi in the small village of Inari, around 40 minutes away.

After arriving at the hotel there is the chance to settle into your rooms before dinner in the hotel’s renowned restaurant.

    Included Meals:  Dinner
  • The landscape around Inari is a real playground, with dense snowy forests and frozen lakes providing the back drop to your activities. The best way to cover distance in this region is on snowmobiles, and so after a leisurely first morning, you will enjoy a soup lunch at the hotel before heading out to explore.

Following a hearty breakfast, full instruction regarding the safe operation of a snowmobile will be provided before you hit the trails.

Typically these trips will see you travel across the vast frozen surface of Lake Inari, which is an ideal way to take in the winter landscapes. You will travel two people per snowmobile and the driver must hold a full driving licence and be over the age of 18. You will be out for around 2 hours in total.

Following your adventure, you will have the afternoon free to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

If you prefer to include additional activities, then please see the ‘personalise’ section of the holiday page for further details as you may like to add in additional activities such as snowshoeing or cross- country skiing.

After dinner, you will search for the Aurora in the most fitting of ways, as you travel by reindeer-pulled sleigh. These animals are synonymous with Lapland and are extremely important to the region. If conditions are favourable, then hopefully the Northern Lights will make an appearance for you tonight. You will be out for around two hours (including transfers).

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • After breakfast, you will transfer to a local husky centre to meet with the mushers and their loyal teams of dogs.

You’ll hear all about the lives of the sled dogs and receive full tuition before heading out with your teams (two people per sled with the option to swap driver halfway through). Though the dogs may be loud and excitable before you set off, they’ll soon settle into a pace so you can enjoy the peace of the wilderness around you.

After you return, the dogs will be calmer, so now is a good time to stroke them and take some photographs. You’ll also enjoy hot drinks in a traditional kota (tepee) as you learn more about these wonderful animals. The duration of the whole activity including transfers will be approximately 3 hours.

Lunch will be served back at the hotel.

In the afternoon, you can take the short walk to the Sámi Siida Museum*. The exhibitions here are world-renowned and you will learn a huge amount about life in the region and the culture which underpins the traditions to this day. There is also a wonderful short film including imagery taken in the local area and some spectacular Northern Lights pictures.

After your evening meal in the hotel's restaurant, tonight you will have a free evening to spend as you please. You may want to book onto another Northern Lights hunt, see our ‘Personalise’ section for details.

*Please note: The Sámi Siida Museum will sadly be closed for renovation for the 2021/2022 season so the main exhibitions are not accessible.  Guests will be able to visit the gift shop and the open-air museum – an outdoor trail showcasing exhibits on the cultural heritage, architectural heritage and livelihoods of Finland’s three Sámi cultures. Guests are also welcome to visit Sajos, an architecturally beautiful building in the heart of Inari which is home to the Sámi Parliament and is the centre of Sámi culture and administration. Guided tours and an informative video are offered throughout the day and there is also a shop selling Sámi handicraft, books and music.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Following breakfast, you will have some free time, a great opportunity could be to walk to the village and buy some souvenirs to take home with you. Lunch will then be served at the hotel.

Your afternoon will be spent furthering your knowledge of the traditional local culture as you head to the shores of Lake Muddas, to meet a lady named Tuula. For many years, Tuula has welcomed people to her homestead and imparted her knowledge and shared her stories.

First on the agenda is the chance to meet and feed her reindeer, which is a wonderful chance to see the animals up close. You will then learn a little about the history of her family home and how life has changed in the region over the past years. She will then demonstrate how traditional reindeer boots are made.

Snowshoes are an effective way to travel easily over the deep snow and are a wonderfully peaceful way of exploring. After dinner in the hotel, tonight your guide will lead you on a snowshoe hike through the forest, deep into the darkness and to a prime Aurora viewpoint where a campfire will be lit.  You will be out for around three hours (including transfers) and, if conditions are favourable, hopefully you will be treated to a farewell display.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Today it is sadly time for you to head home and you will be transferred to the airport in time for your return flights. If you would like to extend your stay in the region, then simply talk to one of our Aurora Travel Experts.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast

The holiday was absolutely fantastic 15 March 2018 by Catherine Barton & John Hall

The holiday was absolutely fantastic; I cannot recommend it enough. We were cautioned from the very outset that there was no guarantee we would see the Northern Lights and I think this was fair as our expectations were realistic. However, we did see the Northern Lights on two evenings out of six. That said the activities and culture of Inari meant the holiday meant so much more than just the

Northern Lights. Yes, it would have been disappointing if we had not seen them but not a complete disaster as the activities would have made up for it somewhat. I really enjoyed the dog sledging; it was fast paced I really couldn't believe that they let me take control of a sledge on my own!! It was a little scary as I hadn't done anything like that before but they were really clear with the instructions and reassuring that the dogs knew where they were going. I would really like to thank the staff at the Kultahovi Hotel for making us feel most welcome. The food there is outstanding and the staff are keen to talk to you about its origins, local customs and make recommendations both food and activity wise. The room was excellent and very well maintained throughout our trip. The guides for the snowmobiling and particularly the snowshoe excursion were excellent - very helpful, informative (about everything from local nature, culture and Aurora). I would especially like to thank the snowshoe guide who extended our excursion slightly so we could take in the Northern Lights even though he had already done a very long day's work and it delayed us. He remained positive and seemed to understand that it wasn't something we witnessed every day.

Amazing guides 15 February 2017 by Susan & Eamon Macdermott

Well organised - and had activities every day which we loved. It would be great to recognise our amazing guides who were so helpful - Stefano on the snowmobiles, Matty and Pekka on the skis, Mika on the snowmobile night safari and Matt who stepped in for his wife to tell us about the reindeer, and finally Marco who kindly helped us sort our camera out and enabled us to get some pretty good shots

Inari - Aurora in the Sámi Heartlands 15 February 2017 by Julie & Simon Jessop

Everything was enjoyable my personal fave was seeing the Northern Lights and huskies; husbands was the snowmobiles. Staff in hotel were excellent guides on all excursions were all amazingly friendly and I think every one of our trips ran over - we never felt rushed.

The husky drive was amazing 15 February 2017 by Richard Gilbert

Our room in the building next to the lovely hotel was always warm, practical and comfortable, with a great view of the nearby river through the trees. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great and our evening meals were good - attractive, well cooked and chosen to give us an idea of local cuisine. There was a very full package of well-planned activities in our

three days there (4 nights) run by experienced, friendly guides. We managed to go on a husky ride, experienced beginner cross-country skiing, visit a reindeer farm and went on two lengthy and exciting snowmobile adventures; one across the frozen lake in the day time and the other through the forests in the evening. There was also a snowshoe walk at night, hunting the Aurora. The husky drive was amazing, (as was the snowmobiling) through forests of trees all covered in thick snow, which sparkled in the afternoon sun. Although temperatures were around -10, we were comfortable and warm in our layers of clothes and the excellent outer suit, boots and outer mittens that they provided. Finally - yes, luckily - we even saw the Northern Lights on our last night, from the frozen lake just 10 minutes walk away - fantastic! Make time to see the extra ordinary Sámi Siida Museum and Nature Centre – a 10 minute walk away. To actually see the lights was a bonus - but in fact the holiday was amazing anyway with all the activities, the beautiful snow scenery, and the lovely group of fellow guests that we were with (we had no idea of how we would cope with the cold - but having followed all the advice given, and with the provided clothes, we were fine - cosy and confident! And the hotel has a super fire in the bar to sit around with a warm drink too!).

Fabulous holiday. Thanks for everything 28 December 2016 by Timothy and Lesley Green

Having left it late to book anything for New Year, I expected the best stuff to have gone. We got a choice of holidays though and picked Inari. If this is what was left, I can't imagine what the others were like! It has to be said that we were very lucky with the weather. It was mild (for Northern Finland) in that I don't think it went below minus ten whereas minus twenty would be more typical.

The accommodation was great but we were so busy being active that I only got to try the sauna once. Wouldn't advise missing the museum, though - a great guide to the area and people. The activities were superb. The basics were good but always had little extras like the picnics, drinks, snacks etc. Again, we had great weather with snow only when driving the huskies and a clear evening for the snowshoeing. Our guides were outstanding. As for the Aurora, that just got better and better. First night on the snowshoes was clear and gave us all time to sort out our cameras. The second night was thick cloud and we were giving up when the skies cleared and we had a display. Home by midnight! Finally, New Year's Eve was cloudy and an abortive bus safari was disappointing. Back at the hotel, between first and second courses it appeared and then reserved its best for a minute after midnight! The rest of the group were cosmopolitan to say the least, and great company. Fabulous holiday. Thanks for everything.

A fabulous holiday 30 November 2016 by Carole and Rachael Oborne

Matti was our activity guide for most activities and was very helpful. We were lucky enough to see the Northern lights on two of the three nights we were there, other than that the best activity was the Husky sled ride. We loved it! A fabulous holiday that I have been telling all my friends about. Well organised and a trip that everyone should take!

Thank you for a brilliant experience 30 November 2016 by Kay & Roger Leech and Janet Bennett

Thank you for a brilliant experience. From the first conversation with Barry - who advised choose a holiday that interests you and the Northern Lights will be a bonus - right through the holiday the organisation was excellent and all the people involved were friendly, helpful, welcoming and well-informed. The hotel accommodation was lovely and warm and we were very well fed. The holiday was busy

but the pace suited us perfectly and gave the chance to try out so many different activities whilst also finding out about the Sámi people and their way of life. The museum was excellent, we loved the parliament building and finding out about traditional crafts when we went to the reindeer farm. The cold-weather clothing was much appreciated, keeping us toasty despite -25-degree temperatures when out with the husky dogs and the hot drinks and fires were very welcome. Whether it was snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or husky dog sledging the training and advice was thorough. The icing on the cake was seeing the Northern lights in all their glory on not one but two nights!!

Fantastic and incredibly memorable holiday!!!! 26 March 2015 by Kirsten Lawrie

Where do I start!? It was all incredible!! I suppose it started with the fact that Aurora Zone called us at Helsinki Airport on our way to Inari to let us know there had been a gate change for our connecting flight - what great service! The accommodation at Hotel Kultahovi was just lovely - the rooms were spacious, clean and having our own sauna was such a luxury! When we arrived, one of the

owners was there to greet us and explain a little about the hotel. The food at the hotel was amazing - Arctic Char, slow-cooked pork, reindeer - just to name a few - we definitely didn’t go hungry! And there were three delicious courses every meal! Luckily we had lots of activities during the days and nights to help work off all of the food. The daytime activities were all fantastic: the highlights were definitely the snowmobiles and the husky safaris (we did the two night extension so had two husky safaris). Of course the main highlight of the whole trip was the incredible Northern Lights displays we were lucky enough to see. We saw something every night we were there! Just spectacular!! All of the guides we had were lovely and very knowledgeable (answering all of my silly questions). Antti was our guide for the first four days but then he had a couple of days off and on one of the nights he had off, he even called the guide we were with, Beth, to check if we could see the lights because he could see them where he was - it was so nice of him to think of us! Overall, everything just went so smoothly (and I was nervous because this was our first holiday that we haven't organised ourselves) and we could truly just relax and enjoy ourselves! Thank you Aurora Zone for a fantastic and incredibly memorable holiday!!!!

Fabulous trip to Inari 06 March 2014 by Naomi Fordyce

We've just got back from four nights in Inari and it was fabulous. Between the excellent range of activities on offer to the comfortable accommodation and delicious food and, of course, seeing the Northern Lights on two out of three hunts we had the best holiday ever. Our guide, Marku, was brilliant. His local knowledge was great and he was happy to answer all of our questions. He also gave up

When we went snowshoeing they made a brief appearance as we were headed back to the minibus but he was quite happy to stop and let us watch them. On the snowmobile hunt we witnessed an amazing display for over an hour and a half. He only suggested we leave when people were starting to feel cold. I cannot praise his professionalism and dedication enough. There really was something for everyone and it was all pitched at the right level. We have memories to last us a lifetime, or until our next Aurora hunting holiday!

All the activities were excellent 04 April 2013 by Pauline Jackman

This was a tremendous holiday 26 March 2013 by Claire McMillan

This was a tremendous holiday. Very well organised in all aspects. Flight to Copenhagen delayed which obviously not under control of Aurora Zone, did cause a bit of stress as we did not know if we would make the connection, but flight was held for us. Unfortunately not for my suitcase, but it was delivered the next day. The hotel was very nice and staff very pleasant. The activities were all

great. Husky sledging and snowmobiling were brilliant. Maybe the reindeer ride could be a little longer and more adventurous as it felt as if it was more suitable for young children, but that's only a tiny criticism in what was otherwise an informative and enjoyable trip. The flight connection times are very tight, which is not under Aurora Zones control, but I must admit I was very worried when my case with all my thermals, etc did not arrive and could not be tracked. Although it did arrive the next day I was warned it might not arrive until the day we departed. It might be an idea to suggest that one set of warm weather underclothes are taken in hand baggage - just in case. Outer clothes not a problem as the gear that is provided is perfect. Special mention must be given to Antii (no idea if that’s how you spell his name). He was brilliant: well informed, very happy to answer loads of questions, looked after us all very well (we took to calling him "Mum" when he popped out the hot juice and biccies) and on top of all that very funny. He really was the icing on the cake of a great trip...Oh and I probably should mention we did get to see the Aurora on the very first and last nights.
