It is small scale and just oozes comfort and charm with its high-end décor and stunning log-built construction. The owners also happen to be our longstanding friends and suppliers, and we know that they offer nothing less than excellence. With this as your base, we can assure you that every free moment you have can be savoured and enjoyed. The hotel’s proximity to Lake Inari means that, by night, there is a vast expanse of dark sky above you, ideal for Northern Lights hunting.

The lake and surrounding area also offer a base for a myriad of activities during your time here. Despite the short length of this trip, we have included all the “must-dos” when visiting Northern Finland. You will do some incredible dog sledding and visit a reindeer farm, you’ll explore the wilds on snowshoes and will have the chance to try snowmobiling.  We have also included two Northern Lights hunts.

By night, you will spend one relaxed evening at an Aurora Camp which you will typically reach via a snowmobile-pulled sleigh. With your expert guide, you will sit around a warming fire in this prime viewpoint and will wait to see if the Northern Lights will appear. Your second trip will see you venture out on snowshoes as you head to an ideal viewpoint with your guide in the hope of catching a display.

So, go on, spare a few days from your hectic schedules this winter and escape to the remote wilderness of Northern Finland. Returning with memories that will last a lifetime and impressive stories to tell your friends and family, we know that you will not regret it.

This holiday requires a minimum of 2 people to run, however, on some dates we require a minimum of 8 people for our flight allocation. Maximum 30 people (approximately). Please speak to our Travel Experts for further information.

Group Size

We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.

Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.

Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate

Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.

If you are looking for a holiday designed specifically for families then please see our sister company www.activitiesabroad.com.

Itinerary amendments

The order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final and detailed itinerary will be provided either with your final travel documents (which are uploaded into your online account around a week prior to departure) or upon arrival.

Medical History and Advice

We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.

In order to give us the best possible chance to do this, we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.

In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.

Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.

Insurance

Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.

It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.

If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.

Booking Activities Locally

Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).

When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.

In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are properly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.

Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.

The UK Foreign Office Advice

Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice

We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.

The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/

New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade https://www.mfat.govt.nz/

Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html

If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.

If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.

If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.

If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.

Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation

On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.

Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.

Booking your own flights - cancellation disclaimer

If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.

If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.

Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

  • Once you land at Ivalo Airport, you will be greeted by your driver who will be waiting to escort* you to the shores of Lake Inari. The journey will take around thirty minutes, as you venture further North and deeper into the remote wilderness of Finnish Lapland.

After arriving, you will have some time to settle into your cosy hotel room before dinner in the hotel’s fabulous log-built restaurant.

You will also receive your cold weather clothing tonight, so you will be all set to head out this evening and down on to the lake should you wish to begin your Aurora efforts.

Please note that the order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final itinerary will be provided on arrival at your accommodation.

    * Transfers are based on a scheduled group shuttle that sometimes stops at a few nearby hotels. If you would prefer to upgrade to private taxi transfers please ask our Travel Experts for a quotation.

    Included Meals:  Dinner
  • Today, the trip will truly commence as you begin your first full day at Nangu, which includes one of our favourite winter activities as well as an evening Aurora hunt.

After filling up on breakfast, you will take a transfer to the husky farm where you will meet an expert musher who will give you a brief tour of the farm. The first thing you will notice is the loud, impatient barking of the huskies raring to take you on your sleigh-ride. They must wait a little longer as you are given a thorough safety briefing and lesson on how to guide your own husky team before you set off.

Once your guide is comfortable that you are ready, you will head out, huskies first, on an unforgettable journey. With two sharing a sled, you can appreciate the sudden silence as the dogs focus on running. This is an unforgettable way to enjoy the snow-laden trees and the stunning, crisp white surroundings. Halfway through the drive, you will have the chance to pause and swap with your driving partner, so that both of you can try taking control. In total, you will spend 60-90 minutes out with the dogs.

After lunch at the hotel, you will travel to a nearby reindeer farm, where you will meet with a reindeer herder. Here you will learn about the Sámi culture and have the chance to meet and feed the reindeer.

Your busy day will end with a relaxing Aurora hunt, as you head to a dedicated Aurora camp in the hope of spotting the Northern Lights this evening.

Beginning with a snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride, you will kick back and enjoy a cosy journey beneath the stars. You will travel further and further away from any light pollution from the hotel until you come to an Aurora camp spot where you can huddle up around a warming open fire.

Hopefully, while you enjoy a hot drink and some interesting facts and stories told by your guide, the Northern Lights will dance and swirl above you, lighting up the night and putting on an awe-inspiring display. This activity will last around two and a half hours in total.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • After breakfast today, you will explore this wild and wonderful spot on foot, using snowshoes to ease your travels.

Snowshoes will be provided by the hotel, and your guide will show you how to securely strap these over your winter boots before you set off. It is amazing how much further you can travel in snowshoes, as you can cover areas of extremely thick snow that you would otherwise find yourself knee-deep in.

With your guide leading the way, you will take to the snowshoeing trails and venture to even more remote areas of wilderness. Along the way, your guide will explain features of the landscape and any wildlife that you might see. It is also common to spot animal prints embedded into the snow, which your guide can give you some insight into.

Weather permitting, you will break for lunch while the comforting sound of a crackling open fire acts as the only background noise in the peaceful surroundings. This activity will last for around four hours including lunch.

In the afternoon you will get to try one of the most popular forms of transport in Lapland as you board snowmobiles for a two-hour safari. You will be given a safety briefing and full instructions before heading out on a short safari in the hotel’s surroundings with your guide. Please note that you must be over 18 years of age and hold a valid driving licence in order to drive a snowmobile.

After a relaxed late afternoon and final dinner at the hotel, you will head out on a snowshoe Aurora hunt for the final night of your trip.

With your guide leading the way, you venture onto the lake and head to a prime Aurora viewpoint. Here, a fire will be lit, and you will gather with your guide to wait and watch for a potential Aurora display. This is a wonderful way to spend an evening in the wilderness and if the Northern Lights dance above your head, it will be unforgettable. The activity will last for around two and a half hours in total.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Today, it is time to depart ready for your flight home. After breakfast, your transfer will take you to Ivalo Airport, as you bid farewell to a fantastic few days. If you are on an early flight, a packed breakfast will be provided.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast

Wilderness Hotel Nangu

Nights: 1-3

Wilderness Hotel Nangu is an adult-only (16+), boutique hotel tucked away in a secluded spot close to the shores of Lake Inari in North East Finnish Lapland. This is the ideal place for those wanting to escape to a real haven of peace and quiet which just oozes rustic style, charm and comfort. Think handmade wooden furniture, sheepskins, stunning log architecture, comfy chairs and roaring fires; all with a view over snow-laden trees and a vast frozen lake beyond.

The central log-built restaurant and reception building is a spectacular spot in which to dine and unwind and the elegant wooden buildings which contain the bedrooms are around 20-50 metres away.

The hotel was transformed in 2017 by our longstanding friends and partners Jouko and Mari and they have really put their heart and soul into making Wilderness Hotel Nangu the grown-up retreat that it is.

In prime Aurora territory and just a minute’s walk from the shores of Lake Inari, this is really an incredible place in which to hunt the Northern Lights.

There are only 36 bedrooms here and so there is also a real exclusivity about this place and we would really recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

Hotel Facilities

  • The wonderful main log building contains the reception, dining area and lounge where a roaring log fire and tasteful décor makes for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere
  • We think the food at Nangu is delicious and the setting for your meals could not be more delightful. Breakfasts and lunches are both 'help yourself' buffets with local and international flavours. Evening meals consist of three courses: starters and desserts are self-service buffet style and your main course will be served to you at your table (except for Christmas and New Year's Eve). Guests are provided with two or three choices each evening
  • There is a sauna situated in one of the bedroom buildings and this is available for guests to reserve during their stay. The ideal way to relax after a day of activities
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in the public areas at Nangu, but really, other than checking the Aurora forecasts, we recommend that you just switch off from the outside world

This was a holiday I won't forget and I look forward to another Aurora Zone break in the future 05 March 2020 by Jackie Siffleet

I'd booked this trip as a bucket list dream to see the Northern Lights and figured that if I wasn't lucky enough to see them, the activities would make up for it. I never did see the lights but this trip was full of wow and was a perfect holiday. The Nangu Wilderness Hotel is lovely, food great, staff fantastic and I loved every second... I just wish I could have stayed longer. I was really

looking forward to the husky safari and it didn't disappoint but I was surprised how much I loved the snowshoeing (I'm 64 and not so fit!) and the snowmobiling with stunning views of the setting sun appearing at unexpected moments. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and the Aurora Zone rep, Lucia, was fantastic and took the trouble to go into Inari to buy me the Sami drum I wanted and couldn't get at the hotel. This was a holiday I won't forget and I look forward to another Aurora Zone break in the future. Loved it!

Best experience ever! 27 February 2020 by Patricia Coopersmith

Staying in the glass-top cabin was quite an experience!  We didn't get much sleep as we kept waking up to check for the Northern Lights. The last two nights, we were in a regular room which was also very nice and comfortable.  Nangu's main lodge/restaurant was very nice, with excellent food and wine choices. We really enjoyed the adults-only atmosphere that this hotel offers. It's an

easy walk to the frozen lake, where many activities occur.  We snowshoed, snowmobiled, and went dogsledding -  all of the activities were fun and very professionally run. Kudos to our main tour guide, Marti, who was absolutely wonderful! The only thing I would change about the tours was that we had 4 hours of snowshoeing one morning, but somehow got scheduled for more snowshoeing that night as well (we were too tired for that again, but pushed through).  Suggest spreading this out a bit.  Being given the snowsuits, boots, and gloves to borrow was key - and we really needed the heated hand warmers (for purchase) since it was around 0-degrees F most of the time!  Airport transport to/from was quick and easy. The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful at the hotel, and we met some wonderful people from other countries.  We saw the Northern Lights all 3 nights! Just an amazing experience overall, and we will remember this trip forever! Thanks for everything.

I will definitely be looking to return again 16 January 2020 by Angela Rourke

All the activities were enjoyable, each with its own special part to it. The guides were all experienced in their field and could not be more helpful and patient with us. I would like to thank all the hotel staff for their amazing service (especially with my gluten free diet) and all the guides we had during our 3 days in the Nangu Hotel. I will definitely be looking to return again. I would also

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Hotel catered to my daughters Vegan diet with flair, she was very impressed! The location of Nangu was perfect! To be able to walk out of our room and see the lights over head was a dream come true. I thoroughly enjoyed walking across the frozen lake in snow shoes in the evening to view the Aurora. We only had a small group and it was magical! I was

Nangu - Northern Lights short break 28 February 2019 by Deborah Belsher & Sara Clarke

We thought the experience was amazing and feel extra lucky to have seen spectacular aurora shows every night. All the staff we encountered were friendly and knowledgeable. The activities were wonderful, the place beautiful and we will definitely recommend Nangu to others.

Husky sledging was excellent. And snow-mobiling. Too hard to choose. 31 January 2019 by Tom & Natalie Davies

We loved the trip. From the comfy pick-up to the lovely food. This was genuinely a dream holiday. The food was excellent, all the staff were very friendly, the wine choice in the hotel was good (and not overly expensive in my view considering it came from SA), the activities were well co-ordinated and the rooms were lovely and warm. Only issues was no wifi in the superior rooms, but that was a

We had the most fabulous time 27 December 2018 by The Greaves Family

We had the most fabulous time. Nagu Wilderness Hotel is beautiful. The staff are great. I really cannot fault it at all. The dog sledding was all of our favourite activity. It was wonderful to do it but also wonderful to see the dogs and how they live, and how well looked after they are.

Our guides (Kirsten and Jukka) were especially lovely and really patient 13 December 2018 by Katie Wilson & Rhonda Marvell

Two of our guides (Kirsten and Jukka) were especially lovely and really patient when we struggled with the aurora snowshoeing. Visiting a reindeer farm was especially interesting as we got to have berry juice and chat with the reindeer farmer, who was Sami, and really informative about his experiences as both a reindeer farmer and Sami in Finland.

The hotel and all staff were absolutely fantastic. 16 January 2018 by Hilary Baseley

The hotel and all staff were absolutely fantastic. We would like to thank our guide Jani in particular - he was friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and a brilliant and safe driver. He helped make our trip.
