The dark skies of December
In this part of the world, the Northern Lights appear year-round but it isn’t until the darker skies set in that you get the best chance to enjoy a light display. That is because they provide the longest window to experience the wondrously-green lights in all their glory. The Aurora Zone got its name from a band of the Arctic Circle that stretches from 66°N to 69°N over Northern Scandinavia and North America famed for its frequent and excellent Northern Lights displays.
All of our locations sit right in the middle of this band, meaning there is no better place to see the elusive Auroras. Not only do we use the best locations we also use our own unique Aurora hunting formula to tailor each and every one of our holidays to give you your best bet in nature’s lottery. So although the Northern Lights are never guaranteed, we really do give you the best possible chance of seeing them on your holiday.
The big freeze of winter is an incredible thing to see. You can almost imagine someone pulling a blanket of snow over the landscape and covering it with this mesmerising white powder.
Forget what you’ve heard about pitch-black 24 hours in Northern Scandinavia, though the sun may not break the horizon, the residual light from the snow creates an ethereal reflection.
This is a truly wonderful time of year where the daylight hours feel neither like day or night and instead, a greyish blue tint washes over the bright-white landscape. In late December these colours are even more prominent, so much so the locals call this time of year, ‘Blue Time’. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a real-life Christmas card during a Northern Lights holiday in December 2020.
Tis the season to be jolly!
The Northern Lights may be your main attraction, but the daytime hours are just as alluring, particularly during the most enchanting time of the year.
The deep snow of December opens up an array of opportunities for winter activities and gives you a chance to really embrace the festive spirit.
