Northern Lights Holidays January 2020

Northern Lights hunting in January

The biggest draw to our destinations in the winter months is the Aurora viewing potential. To see the Northern Lights in their full glory, you need dark skies and January certainly offers that. Strictly speaking, it’s difficult to say the best time to see the Northern Lights because they are a naturally occurring phenomenon. However, we have done considerable research and used our Aurora hunting formula to show that the long, dark January nights have always delivered some incredible sightings. What’s more, the chance of seeing the Northern Lights as you ring in the New Year is certainly a celebration to remember!

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Aurora Borealis appears most frequently in a band just north of the Arctic Circle at approximately 66°N and 69°N. Essentially, regardless of whether solar activity is high, medium or low, this is where you have the best chance. Naturally, this is where we base all of our Northern Lights holidays in an area we call the Aurora Zone. In those destinations, we also work closely with local guides who know the area and provide innovative ways for you to go on the hunt for the Northern Lights.

Of course, there is more to January than the Northern Lights. In late December and early January, you’ll get to witness the phenomenon of ‘Blue Time’. This is how the locals refer to the amazing light that occurs when the sun never rises above the horizon. Rather than the misconception of 24 hours of darkness, the blue tones of the not-quite daylight, not-quite night-time light reflect off the brilliantly-white snow surrounding you. As the sun returns in early January, the colours change again and the pinkish glow of the appearing sun spreads across the crisp white landscape.

The hidden magic of the start of the New Year

The deep snow in January opens up a wintery playground and an abundance of activities for you to explore the white landscape.

Better still, as this isn’t a peak travel month for our Aurora Zone destinations, you can often beat the crowds on your Northern Lights holiday. While the cold, dark nights might leave you feeling tired at home, here you will revel in them and the Aurora hunting potential you’ll have throughout the night. The beginning of a new year brings with it an air of excitement, and the magical destinations in our Aurora Zone are the perfect places to get your year off to an amazing start.
