This huge stretch of natural surroundings offers incredible winter experiences such as dog sledding and ice climbing, both included in your itinerary. As night falls, the Northern Lights become the top priority on your agenda with Aurora snowshoeing and a stay in a glass igloo.

The Sunday Morning Resort in Pyha Finland occupies some seriously prime real estate. Not only is it surrounded by forests and frozen lakes and right next to the incredible Pyhä-Luosto National Park, but it is also situated 100kms above the Arctic Circle - an excellent position for Northern Lights hunting.

This four-night stay makes the most of the location with an Aurora snowshoeing experience for a relaxing walk into the wilds during the dark Arctic night. Then on your last night, you will stay in a cosy glass igloo in Pyhä. Here, the bed is ideally placed under the half-glassed roof for the chance to see the Northern Lights as you lay tucked up under your duvet! What’s more, throughout your trip you will be able to use the Aurora alert system app which will notify you if the Northern Lights are in the sky.

Your first three nights will be in the main lodge hotel rooms at the Sunday Morning Resort, designed as a relaxing space to retire to after a day of activities. Your itinerary features an array of excursions, including one of the most sought-after winter experiences; dog sledding. You will try your hand as a musher as you and your team of sled dogs ride through the stunning winter scenes. We have also included an ice climbing experience, to really get up close to the frozen landscape. Accompanied by experienced guides, your hard work up the frozen waterfall will be rewarded with incredible views of the landscape.

The Sunday Morning Resort prides itself on its eco-credentials. It is a fully carbon-neutral resort due to the eco-friendly heating systems and dense forest surroundings, which acts as a carbon sink. There is also a brilliant range of environmentally-friendly activities you can choose from in your spare time, such as electric snowmobiles.

  • Once you arrive at Rovaniemi Airport, you will be met and transferred to the Sunday Morning Resort approximately 90 minutes away, to check into your hotel room in the main lodge.

    Enjoy dinner in the restaurant ahead of your Northern Lights hunt. You will meet with your local guide who will fit you with snowshoes before leading you out into the Arctic night and on the lookout for the Aurora. Snowshoes will help you move over the deep snow with ease as you take to the trails and travel further into the wilderness, always looking up to the sky for the chance to see the Northern Lights. You will be out for approximately two hours.

  • Fill up on breakfast ahead of your ice climbing experience.

    You will travel to Pyhä and meet with professional guides who will teach you all you need to know to try ice climbing. Once you are comfortable with the techniques, you will climb the ice wall twice. The wall is approximately 20 metres high which gives you an excellent vantage point to see more of the stunning winter scenes. Please note this activity is suitable for those with moderate physical condition and at least 12 years old and you will be out for approximately 2.5 hours.

    If you prefer, you could swap this experience for a visit to an amethyst mine. You will travel to Lampivaara hill via the special snowtrain where your guide will tell you about the history of the amethyst and you will be able to dig your very own stone to take with you as a brilliant souvenir.

    Lunch and dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant and tonight you will have a free evening to spend as you please.

  • Following breakfast, you will experience one of the most sought-after Arctic activities. After meeting with your local guide, you will travel to the nearby husky farm where you will meet with the excitable dogs.

    You will receive a full safety briefing before travelling into the wilds for five kilometres with your loyal team of sled dogs out in front. You will ride two people per sled with one as a passenger and one as a musher, with the option to swap. Upon return to the husky farm, you will have time to thank the dogs and take some photos of your brilliant team.

    Following lunch and dinner in the restaurant, you will have a free evening to spend as you please. You could add on a dedicated Northern Lights activity such as Aurora snowmobiling, found in our ‘Personalise’ tab.

  • Today you have a free day to spend however you like. You could visit the nearby amethyst mine for a fantastic insight into this mesmerising gemstone - details can be found in our ‘Personalise’ tab.

    Following lunch, you will transfer to your wonderful glass igloo to finish your holiday in serious style. You will have time to settle into your Aurora accommodation and our guides can recommend where to eat this evening (payable locally). Alternatively, you could go to the local supermarket, just five minutes away and make use of the kitchenette facilities in your igloo.

    As night falls, your Northern Lights hunt begins, right from the comfort of your bed. Lay down and stare up at the Arctic sky through the large glass roof.

  • Today it is sadly time for your Aurora retreat in the wilderness to come to an end. Following breakfast, we will transfer you back to the airport or if you have an early flight time, we will box up breakfast for you to enjoy on your journey.

Sunday Morning Resort

100kms above the Arctic Circle, in the fell scenery of one of Finland’s oldest national parks, sits the peaceful Sunday Morning Resort. With its lakeside and forest surroundings, the resort is aptly named to reflect the atmosphere here - every day is like a tranquil Sunday morning and you’ll feel the serenity as soon as you arrive.

The resort is ideally located just 90 minutes from the airport and Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi but is firmly situated in the heart of the wilderness. With activities available onsite, the Sunday Morning Resort is a brilliant mix of relaxing retreat with easy access to unbelievable Arctic experiences and Northern Lights opportunities.

As well as its excellent location, there is also only space for 28 people at the resort, making it one of the smallest we offer in Finland as well as adding a real exclusivity to this place. We would really recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

MAIN LODGE

TWIN/DOUBLE ROOM: The main building houses four double rooms in the peaceful wing. Each room features a private balcony overlooking the lake, twin/double bed with intelligent mattress, smart TV, WiFi, shower with steam, sauna and massage features, bathrobes, slippers and hairdryer.

Pyhä Glass Igloos

Your Northern Lights hunt can continue long into the night when you stay in one of the Pyhä Igloos, equipped with glass-roof right above your cosy double bed.

The igloos are located on the pristine Pyhätunturi mountain. You will be close to all amenities yet feel like you are secluded in the peaceful Finnish wilderness in your well-equipped cabin.

Pyhä is committed to sustainable tourism which is very apparent in these glass igloos. Ground heat is the core source of energy which is also supported by solar panels on the roof. The walls are built using nine-inch thick certified local timber logs, for a cosy interior and an extremely low carbon footprint.

Facilities:

  • Meals will be served in the restaurant, just a five-minute walk away
  • There is a local supermarket also five minutes away
  • The Naava Visitor Centre with a wonderful exhibition on the local Arctic flora and fauna sits close by, as does the nearest ski lift
  • Make use of the Arctic Barbecue Hut free of charge or at a small cost if you wish to hire it privately for your group
  • To unwind further, book a Finnish sauna and the outdoor hot tub

DOUBLE ROOM WITH SOFA BED - sleeps 2-4:

There is a motorized double bed ideally situated under the glass ceiling for two people. A sofa bed serves as an extra bed for two.

Each igloo comes equipped with a toilet, shower, TV, Wi-Fi and kitchenette which includes a fridge, cooking hobs, dishwasher, kettle and microwave oven.

Aurora Electric Snowmobile Safari

Take the environmentally-friendly eSleds out into the Arctic night for an unforgettable Aurora hunt. Due to their low noise levels, these electronic versions are the only type of snowmobiles allowed in the nearby Pyhä Luosto National Park, meaning you have exclusive access to the expansive landscape. 

You will meet with your local guide who will give you full instructions and a safety briefing on how to drive your electric snowmobile. Then it’s time to head out into the night and search the skies for a potential Northern Lights display.

Please note you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile. You will ride two per snowmobile but you can upgrade to a single rider for a supplement.

The Sunday Morning Resort have a focus on sustainable tourism and a brilliant example of this is their eSled snowmobiles - electronic and environmentally-friendly and the only type of snowmobile allowed right up to the border of the Pyhä Luosto National Park. You will have exclusive access to the stunning surroundings, travelling up to the top of the fells.

You will meet with your local guide who will give you full instructions and a safety briefing before leading you out into the wilderness to explore the Arctic scenes.

Please note you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile. You will ride two per snowmobile but you can upgrade to a single rider for a supplement.

Meeting the Reindeer

During this activity, you will meet with local herders who will introduce you to their animals and tell you why reindeer herding is so important in this region.

Aurora Reindeer Sleigh ride

Stay cosy in your reindeer-pulled sleigh as you ride out into the dark night.

You will meet with your local guide and the much-loved Lappish animals before stepping into the sleigh and wrapping up warm. The reindeer will lead you further into the wilderness as you keep an eye on the sky for a potential Northern Lights display.
