The white islands and snowy forests of the Luleå Archipelago provide an enchanting setting for this four-night Christmas holiday at Pine Bay Lodge. Make the most of the classic winter activities and Northern Lights hunting while enjoying a local take on festive celebrations. Where better to celebrate Christmas than Swedish Lapland?
The Luleå Archipelago has over 1,300 islands – all part of the Bay of Bothnia, which freezes over during the winter. This magical landscape is perfect for snow activities, promising an unforgettable Christmas getaway.
Pine Bay Lodge is a short distance inland, sat on the shore of a forest lake. Built in a simple and welcoming Scandinavian style, it has an open lounge area with a fireplace that is ideal for mixing with your fellow guests, as well as excellent sauna facilities.
During this holiday, you will explore the surrounding forests and wider spaces on snowmobiles and husky sleds. You will also be taken to learn the Swedish pastime of ice fishing, which is a unique experience. The location of Pine Bay Lodge has plenty of Aurora potential, so we have included two Northern Lights hunts in your itinerary to maximise your chances of seeing a display. Sit back in a snowmobile-pulled sled and look to the skies, and trek on snowshoes as you search for the Aurora.
In Sweden, Christmas Eve is the time for holding main celebrations. You can look forward to a superb Christmas buffet and a wonderfully festive atmosphere!

Day 1 Arrival and introduction
Having arrived at the airport, you will be collected and driven to Pine Bay Lodge. Along the way, you can get familiar with the amazing landscape in this part of the world. After checking in, you can enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge with other guests.
Following this, you will have an introductory meeting with your guide, who can answer any questions you may have about the itinerary and give you the cold-weather clothing which will be yours to keep for the duration of your stay.
Before heading to bed, you can unwind in the Pine Bay Lodge lounge area or take a walk outside to see if the Northern Lights are showing.
Day 2 Snowmobile forest tour and husky safari
On your first day in the Luleå region, you will try out a snowmobile tour of the nearby forests and a husky safari –two of the most popular snow-based activities in Swedish Lapland.
Following breakfast, you will be fully briefed on how to safely drive the snowmobiles. It will then be time to journey two people per vehicle on a two-hour safari through the woods. The speed of a snowmobile allows you to rapidly cover a range of terrain, giving you a full scenic tour. There will be a break along the way for hot drinks, letting you get fully fuelled up for the remainder of the safari.
Anyone wishing to drive a snowmobile must be at least 18 years old and in possession of a full driving licence. It is possible to upgrade and drive one person per snowmobile – please see the ‘Personalise’ section for more information.
Lunch will be had back at the lodge, after which you will set out for an exciting husky safari – a firm favourite with all visitors!
At a local husky farm, you will be taught how to ride a sled before moving onto the trail. The dogs are born to run and will be enthusiastically noisy at first. Once they get running, you will be stunned at how quickly the volume drops. The safari will take around two hours, with everyone travelling two people per sled. There will be the chance to swap the roles of driver and passenger. Hot drinks will be served along the way.
Returning to the lodge, you can spend time relaxing before dinner. Why not pay a visit to the sauna, which can be paid for on-site? Alternatively, you might like to walk outside or just sit by the fire.
Day 3 Optional activities, Northern Lights sled tour, Christmas festivities
After breakfast, you will have Christmas Eve free to make the most of at your own pace. We have a special hovercraft tour of the Luleå Archipelago which can be added in today. It will take you around the many frozen islands by the coast and is a very different way of travelling – please see the ‘Personalise’ section for more details. Lunch at Pine Bay Lodge is included today.
There will be a lovely Northern Lights hunt this evening where you will sit on reindeer pelts in a comfy snowmobile-pulled sled. As your guide takes you to the best display locations, fingers crossed that the Northern Lights appear to call in Christmas! A filling Christmas buffet and festivities will also be enjoyed this evening, as Christmas Eve is the time for celebrations in Sweden.
Day 4 Ice fishing and Northern Lights snowshoeing with wilderness dinner
Merry Christmas! Breakfast leads into the traditional Swedish pastime of ice fishing. Having been transported by snowmobile-pulled sleigh to a fishing spot, you will be shown by your guide how to drill through the ice and get a line set up. As you wait for the fish to bite, you can sip a hot drink and look at the beautiful landscape all around you.
Lunch will be had back at Pine Bay Lodge, followed by a free afternoon. Why not revisit the sauna and get refreshed for the evening’s activity?
Instead of having a farewell meal at the lodge, you will be treated to a snowshoe hunt for the Northern Lights and a freshly prepared wilderness dinner. Snowshoes make it very easy to get over areas of thickly laid snow, taking you deep into the winter environment. You will be taught about the flora and fauna of the region as you go. Reaching your spot for dinner, you will sit on reindeer skins as your guide rustles up a delicious meal. Should luck hold out, the Northern Lights will also make an appearance on your last night in Swedish Lapland.
Day 5 Depart or extend your stay with a night at the Treehotel
Finishing breakfast, you will be driven to the airport for your journey home. You can also choose to extend your holiday with a night at the wondrous Treehotel – please see the ‘Personalise’ section for more information.

Pine Bay Lodge
The lodge is located on the coastal edge of the Luleå Archipelago offering views across the frozen sea and surrounding snow-clad forests. There is minimal light pollution here, resulting in the night sky producing stunning displays of the Northern Lights if conditions are right.
The words homely and charming immediately spring to mind when describing Pine Bay Lodge (Furufjärden in Swedish). It offers a ’home from home’ style of accommodation, which is comparable to that of a ski chalet.
Pine Bay is the kind of place that makes you feel like you want to curl up by the fire and relax with your slippers on. Obviously, this is highly recommended after a day of adventures, as long as the Northern Lights are not dancing around the sky as they often do.
Our good friend Göran Widén, who owns the lodge, recently told us: "If I come into the lodge and find someone fast asleep on the sofa in front of the open fire, it is the ultimate compliment. For people to be so relaxed and comfortable in the lodge shows I have been successful in creating the atmosphere I had in mind when dreaming of how I wanted my guests to feel during their holiday."
- The lodge is centred on the main lounge area, where the open fire beckons guests to the cosy sofas
- The open plan dining area offers views of the surrounding countryside and at night the chance to keep a watchful eye out for the Northern Lights (many a meal has been interrupted here)
- The kitchen at the lodge is a real highlight and every evening a delicious menu of local produce is carefully prepared for all guests
- A sauna is available to book locally and we do encourage all guests to enjoy the traditional roll in the snow afterwards. This will help you understand the real meaning of the word refreshing!
The lodge has only eight guest bedrooms in the main bedroom, all with en-suite shower rooms. There is also a family suite of rooms in a small annexe adjacent to the main building. You really could describe this as an ‘exclusive destination’. The rooms are very comfortable and provide a peaceful place to lay your head after a day of adventures.

You will set off across the ice and islands and head out to the island of Brändöskär which is typically close to the edge of the frozen sea. You will disembark and take a walk on the ice where, depending on the weather conditions, you may witness some of the vast natural sculptures which form as the pack ice gradually shifts and cracks.
A light lunch is included and you will be served warm drinks before returning to the lodge.

An Aurora Hideaway at Christmas 23 December 2016 by The Oakes Family
The dog sledding on a snowy day was unique but we enjoyed everything - it was a terrific family vacation.
