Wilderness Hotel Muotka and Wilderness Hotel Nellim are two of our most sought-after Northern Lights destinations which is why we’ve created this combined trip to allow you to experience both. Spend your Christmas week on this great Aurora adventure, enjoying bucket-list winter activities and exciting Northern Lights hunts.

The hotels sit in remote areas, far from light pollution and so the Aurora potential is phenomenal. At each location, you’ll search for the Northern Lights with expert guides who have extensive local knowledge and Aurora expertise. There are also the innovative Northern Lights accommodation options on offer in both destinations

The start of your week is in the brilliantly secluded Muotka, where you will enjoy the peace and quiet of the forests and fells which surround the hotel.

You will have many opportunities to explore the landscape. The region is renowned for its cross-country ski trails so you will try this popular pastime as well as snowshoeing, reindeer encounters and a snowmobile safari.

Your evenings in Muotka are all about the Northern Lights. Following expert guides, you’ll travel to a specifically chosen Aurora Camp and hike to a prime lookout spot during a night-time snowshoe hunt.

After your four nights at Muotka, you will then transfer to Nellim with a stop en-route at the village of Inari. This is the heart of the indigenous Sámi culture and you’ll learn all about it during a visit to the Siida Museum.

Upon arrival at Nellim, just 9km from the Russian border you’ll find real wilderness begging to be explored. Here, you will enjoy snowmobiling and a husky safari, as you explore further afield and onto the ice of Lake Inari.

Nellim is also equipped with Aurora Camps and you’ll visit one by travelling in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. What’s more, the hotel’s brilliant location means that on any free evenings if the conditions are favourable, you can walk just a few minutes to see a spectacular Northern Lights display.

Though the itinerary includes Arctic and Aurora highlights, you could add your own extra special touches such as one of the exceptional overnight experiences. In Muotka you could stay in an Aurora Kota – a cabin style with a glass tepee roof above your bed, so you can watch for the Northern Lights as you’re tucked up in your duvet.

At Nellim, you could enjoy the Aurora Bubbles – a stand-alone room equipped with a transparent dome over the bed to ensure you can keep an eye on the sky all night.

Details of all these unforgettable options can be found in the 'Accommodation' and 'Personalise' sections of the holiday page.

The activities outlined will all be included in your holiday, however, the order listed is for guidance only, and your agenda will be confirmed on arrival.

  • Upon arrival at the airport, you will be transferred* to start your great Aurora Adventure at the Wilderness Hotel Muotka.

Enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant and make sure you keep an eye on the sky, you never know when the Northern Lights might make an appearance.

The order of the activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your activity timetable will be provided on arrival.

    * Transfers are based on a scheduled group shuttle which sometimes makes stops at a couple of hotels nearby. If you would prefer to upgrade to private taxi transfers, please ask our Aurora Travel Experts for a quotation.

    Included Meals:  Dinner
  • After breakfast, it’s time to learn all about the Northern Lights during an Aurora workshop with an expert guide. This will be a simple overview of the science behind the phenomenon, and you’ll also learn what to look out for during your hunts this week.

Next, you’ll explore the stunning wilderness surrounding the hotel as you enjoy a snowshoe hike through the forest. Following the guide, you will observe local flora and fauna as the snowshoes help you walk over the deep snow. Lunch will be served around an open fire (weather permitting) and you will be out for around 4 hours in total.

Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant ahead of tonight’s hunt for the Northern Lights. There are several Aurora Camps around Muotka, all chosen due to their magnificent views of the night sky. You will travel in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile to one of the camps where a fire will be lit and you’ll look to the Arctic sky for a potential Northern Lights display. In total, you will be out for around 2.5 hrs.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Fill up on breakfast because today you’ll venture further into the wilds on a snowmobiling adventure.

Your guide will give you a full safety briefing and instructions on how to drive the snowmobile before you set off on the trails and towards a local reindeer farm. Here, you will meet with the herder and their animals, learning all about the importance of reindeer in the region. You will also enjoy a short reindeer sleigh ride and be shown how to use a traditional lasso. A warming soup lunch will be included during your activity and you will then return to Muokta on your snowmobile. Throughout, you’ll be travelling two people per snowmobile and will have the chance to swap drivers at the reindeer farm (any driver must be over 18 and have a full driving licence). The activity lasts around 4 hours in total.

Today is Christmas Eve so you will enjoy a special festive dinner at the hotel, as the Finns traditionally celebrate Christmas on the 24th. Afterwards, you will strap on snowshoes once again but this time, it’s into the Arctic night. With just your head torches to light the way, you will follow the guide to a prime Northern Lights location. Warm up by a campfire as you watch the skies. In total, you will be out for around 2.5 hours. The distance travelled on snowshoes varies depending on conditions.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Muotka is renowned as one of the best cross-country skiing destinations in Finland, and so you simply must try it during your visit here.

You don’t need any prior skiing experience as you will be given full instructions. Following your guide along the tracks, you’ll explore the forests and admire the wonderful snowy surroundings. If you enjoy this activity, there’s also the opportunity to hire skis at Muotka or Nellim to explore independently. The lesson lasts around 2 hours in total.

After dinner tonight, the evening is free for you to spend as you please. What’s great about Muotka is that if the Aurora forecast is looking likely, you won’t need to venture far to see a brilliant display.

There’s also the option to spend a night in one of the superb Aurora Kotas, to search the skies from the comfort of your bed. Details can be found in the ‘personalise’ section of the holiday page. Please note that as the final order of activities will be confirmed on arrival, the kota cannot be guaranteed to be booked on your free night, but you’ll still be able to enjoy plenty of time in the accommodation after any activities.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • After breakfast, the second half of your Aurora adventure begins.

You will transfer from Muotka to Nellim and stop at the small village of Inari on the way (approximately 1.5 hours from Muotka). Here, you will visit the Sámi Siida Museum which is the centre for Sámi culture in Finnish Lapland. The museum is a brilliant place to learn all about the rich history of the Sámi people and is a wonderful insight into this way of life.

Lunch will be served at Wilderness Hotel Inari, sister hotel to Muotka and Nellim and then it’s back on the road for around 1.5 hours. You will travel along the edge of Lake Inari, following its shores to arrive at Nellim where you will check in and enjoy an evening meal in the restaurant.

As always, when darkness falls, we recommend keeping an eye on the Aurora forecast. If conditions are looking favourable, you only have to take a short walk away from the hotel to reach exceptional Northern Lights viewpoints. In fact, many of our Aurora Zone Experts saw their first display in these locations.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Nellim’s scenery, with the vast expanse of frozen Lake Inari, dense forests and remote location just begs to be explored. Following breakfast and after a full safety briefing, you’ll snowmobile out on the trails for an exciting adventure through the wilderness. Lunch will be cooked on an open fire (weather permitting). In total, you will be out for around 4 hours today. You will travel two people per snowmobile and will have the chance to swap drivers (all drivers must be over 18 and have a full driving licence).

After dinner, you will head to one of Nellim’s Aurora Camps, travelling by snowmobile-pulled sleigh to reach this remote Northern Lights viewpoint. You’ll warm up by the campfire and if conditions are favourable, the Auroras will start to dance overhead. You will be out for around 2.5 hrs.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • After breakfast, it’s time to experience one of the highlights of the Arctic; a dog sledding safari.

You will be given a safety briefing and full instruction on how to mush your team of dogs and then you’ll head to the husky camp, just a short distance from the hotel. You’ll hear the dogs before you see them, as they are so excited to get running. Rest assured, the dogs will quieten down once they take to the trails, leaving you to enjoy the peace and quiet of the natural surroundings. You will travel two per sled (one driving and one enjoying the views from the sled, with the option to swap drivers) as you enjoy this traditional and memorable form of transport. Back at the camp, you can take pictures with your loyal team of dogs and ask any questions you may have. The total experience lasts around 2 hours and lunch will be served back the hotel.

After dinner, you have another free evening and we strongly recommend walking to one of the frozen lakes to enjoy views of the night sky. With any luck, the Aurora will bid you farewell.

Alternatively, you may wish to book additional activities. Please speak to one of our Aurora Travel Experts.

You may also like to consider spending the night in an Aurora Bubble or Aurora Kota here at Nellim – a fabulous way to end the holiday (see 'Personalise' section for details). Please note that as the final order of activities will be confirmed on arrival, the kota cannot be guaranteed to be booked on a night with no activities, but you’ll still be able to enjoy plenty of time in the accommodation after any activities.

    Included Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Today is sadly departure day and you will be transferred back to the airport to catch your return flights. If you are on an early flight you will be provided with a packed breakfast.

Wilderness Hotel Nellim

Nights: 5-7

Wilderness Hotel Nellim is owned by our good friends Jouko and Mari Lappalainen. Nellim was their first hotel (they now also own the delights of Nangu, Muotka and Wilderness Hotel Inari) and is now renowned as an Aurora destination. It will always hold a special place in our hearts for being the first place many of us saw the Northern Lights. The hotel has been upgraded over the years and now has a wide range of accommodation options including rooms, suites, log cabins and unforgettable Aurora Cabins and Bubbles (see the ‘Personalise’ section for details) which are all within a short walk of the main reception and restaurant building.

A tiny village just 8km from the Russian border, Nellim is a remote spot close to the shores of Lake Inari and surrounded by incredible wilderness, providing perfectly dark skies, ideal for Aurora viewing.

Hotel facilities

  • The restaurant/reception building is the focal point at Nellim. With locally-made furnishings, the atmosphere is charming. Hearty buffets of local and international favourites are served three times a day. There is usually a soup and salad selection, two choices of main meal and a pudding for evening meals
  • Guests can relax next to the roaring fire and enjoy a drink from the bar in the restaurant
  • A sauna is available for guests to use and can be reserved at reception in hourly slots
  • There is a fully-stocked gift shop which offers a range of local produce and souvenirs for you to take home
  • Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the main building for guests outside meal times

If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.

If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.

Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE ADVICE

We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.

The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/

New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.safetravel.govt.nz/

Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html

If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.

If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.

If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.

If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.

Aurora alerts

During your stay, you will be supplied with an Aurora alert. This is typically a mobile phone system to which the staff will send a text should the Northern Lights be sighted. The alerts generally operate until 1 am but it is best to confirm with your guide as times may vary.

The alerts are designed as an aid to Aurora hunting and, although every effort will be made to issue an alert should the conditions seem conducive to a display, things can change very quickly so you should not rely solely on them and should also keep an eye on the sky yourself.

Minimum age

The recommended minimum age for participation in our itinerary is 12 years old, however, for some activities and transfers, you may be joined by other guests and this may include some of a younger age than stated. Any younger participants will be fully supervised and the guides will ensure that their participation takes place only if the activities will be unaffected.

Very few hotels have a minimum age and there may be families staying at them with younger children, especially during the holiday periods. We do have some itineraries and destinations which are guaranteed to be adult-only, so if this is important to you please speak to one of our Travel Experts.

To drive a snowmobile, you must have a full driving licence and be over 18 years old.
