This is a wonderfully flexible Northern Lights holiday and can be tailored to suit those who wish to relax, those who want to be active, and everyone in between. Full details of the activity options can be found in the personalise section of the holiday page.

  • A bright and early start will see you transported from the hustle and bustle of London to the pristine winter landscapes of Finland in the same morning! Your driver will meet you at Rovaniemi for the transfer to Luosto (around 90 minutes) and you’ll get your first glimpse of the wilderness of Lapland. Upon arrival, you may want to head for lunch in one of the small cafés or in the hotel restaurant. We then recommend heading the short distance to the activity offices to collect your winter clothing so you can get out and explore straight away. Your rooms will be available late afternoon (or earlier, but you can leave all of your bags at reception whilst you explore).

Your dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant. Following on from your meal you will meet a local expert who will give an introductory presentation about the Northern Lights, detailing some of the science, myths and legends behind the mystical Aurora Borealis. The group will then discover the Aurora Trail, close to the hotel where you will be shown some nearby Aurora viewpoints and will be able to warm yourselves around a fire.

  • Today is yours to do as you wish. There are a wealth of activities to enjoy if you would like to enhance your holiday with some Arctic experiences and the full range can be found in the ‘Personalise’ section of the holiday page. Luosto also hosts a huge number of cross-country ski trails as well as seven downhill ski slopes for those who want to either learn some new skills or get an Alpine fix.

If relaxation is top of your agenda then you can indulge in spa treatments (payable locally) at the Tunturi Hotel and enjoy the pool, saunas and hot tubs which are available for guests to use (additional charges will apply to use the pool etc if you are staying at the Hotel Aurora). A special 3-course dinner will be served for all guests at the Hotel Aurora this evening in their wonderful restaurant. This will be a real highlight of the holiday and the restaurant is a firm favourite amongst our own staff for preparing truly delicious menus made from the freshest local ingredients.

This evening’s Aurora hunting takes place on snowmobiles. Your guide will provide full instructions and a safety briefing before you take to the trails on the snowmobiles, travelling two people per machine (any driver must hold a full driving licence and be over 18).  You will follow snowy trails and cross frozen waterways as your guide leads you out in search of the ideal Northern Lights viewpoint. If you prefer, you can choose to travel in a sled pulled behind the guide’s machine.

  • This morning you may wish to have a lie in (you are on holiday after all!) after your activity last night and today is again left free for you to decide how you would like to spend your time in Lapland. Our Travel Experts are on hand to provide advice on any of the additional activities available if you would like to add these to your itinerary.

There is no Northern Lights hunt scheduled this evening so you can explore the trails and tracks around the village independently and head to your favourite viewpoint.

  • This morning you will check out of the hotel to catch your direct return flight home.

Luosto Tunturi Spa Hotel

Nights: 1-3

Luosto is a charming ski village in Finnish Lapland with a picturesque backdrop of forested fells, making it the ideal winter retreat. With its handful of shops and cafés, the village manages to maintain a traditional Northern Finnish feel and the guests have easy access to local facilities.

The Luosto Tunturi Spa Hotel is one of only two hotels in the village and continues to be one of our most sought-after accommodation options. This is predominantly due to the varied range of facilities offered here.

Hotel facilities

  • The restaurants at the hotel serve an array of local and international dishes. The main Tunturi restaurant, used for the majority of our trips, serves buffet-style meals. The meals often include choices of one or two dishes and local specialities for evening meals. There is also the Bistro restaurant, which is smaller and serves à la carte meals (additional charges will apply if you would like to dine from the à la carte menu). Finally, the Kelo Log Restaurant, just a short walk down the road, is a vast log cabin restaurant and is used in some of our programmes on one evening.
  • A highlight of the facilities at the Tunturi is the pool as well as the spa facilities, which are a wonderful place to unwind in after a long day outside.
  • The pool has massage and waterfall points and there is also a hot tub for guest use
  • The sauna wing at the hotel offers both Turkish and Finnish saunas, which are heated daily
  • The Amethyst Spa offers guests a range of massage and beauty treatments which you can book in advance or upon arrival (subject to availability and payable locally)
  • The hotel also has a small gym with a limited mix of cardio and weight machines.
  • There are seven neighbouring downhill ski slopes and ski hire is available locally. The hotel will also help you arrange ski passes. Cross-country skis and snowshoes can also be hired locally for you to explore the variety of trails surrounding the hotel if you have some previous experience
  • There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the hotel for guest use

The log cabins are perfect for a private retreat and ideal for a couple. They comprise essentially of one main room with a kitchenette, dining area and a television. Hotel Aurora, Luosto

With spectacular scenery, a tremendous Northern Lights record and a huge array of activities, Luosto is an ideal destination for a holiday within the Aurora Zone.

As Luosto is a small ski resort. There are seven slopes to keep downhill enthusiasts entertained as well as a network of perfectly maintained cross-country skiing and snowshoe tracks, so there is always a way to get outdoors and enjoy the landscape if not on an arranged activity (all equipment is available for hire and is payable locally).

There are a couple of souvenir shops available and a small supermarket where you can buy drinks and snacks. There are also two additional restaurants and a cheap and cheerful café at the small ski centre.

The Hotel Aurora is one of only two hotels here and has proved to be one of our most popular accommodation options in Finland with its boutique charm, excellent gourmet food and cosy rooms with private saunas.

Hotel facilities

On arrival at the Hotel Aurora, guests are provided with an Aurora alarm. Essentially this is a mobile phone which will receive text alerts. The alarm operates via the Geophysical Observatory in Sodankylä which sends a message to the hotel. If the conditions in Luosto are promising then the hotel will alert guests (until around 1 am - please confirm this with the hotel on arrival). The system is designed to aid you in your Northern Lights hunt but as conditions can change very quickly you should not rely solely upon this and should try and keep an eye out yourselves.

There is a lovely dining area from where you can watch the chef in an open kitchen working on a lava stone grill. Local ingredients are very much to the fore and you will witness fish from the lakes and meat from the forest being transformed into delicious dishes that any restaurant would be proud to serve.

Breakfast is a typical Scandinavian buffet and in the evening you will be served a set three-course meal (special dietary requirements such as gluten-free and vegetarian diets can be catered for if we are made aware of them at the time of booking).

There's a small lounge area with a log fire where you can enjoy a pre or post-dinner drink.

Room Types

Standard rooms

Hotel Aurora has eleven beautifully decorated and furnished standard hotel bedrooms. A combination of dark wood and warm colours creates a tranquil and distinctly Lappish atmosphere. All rooms have their own private sauna and en-suite shower room with hairdryer. Hotel Aurora - Arctic View Room

Supplements from: £150pp

The 10 spectacular Arctic View Rooms at the hotel are a favourite with guests and many people like to spend a night in one of these glass-roofed delights. The rooms are situated a short walk from the main hotel building and all of them have excellent views of the night sky from their glass walls and rooftops.

The Arctic View Rooms are en-suite with a shower room but they do not offer guests a private sauna and so this is something to consider when booking.

The rooms are all beautifully furnished and offer a high level of comfort and a great chance to view the night sky and with luck, the Northern Lights, from the comfort of your bed.

Special Nights

Lainio Snow Village

From: £400pp

We have sent many happy guests to Lainio Snow Village in recent years but this year the artists have really outdone themselves. The Snow Village has been attracting worldwide press attention due to its incredible theme this year…. HBO’s Game of Thrones. The show was created from a series of books written by George R. R. Martin and has now grown to be a worldwide phenomenon.

Read more about this activity

The Game of Thrones theme is primarily centred around the public areas and whether you are a fan of the show or not, it is impossible not to be impressed by the gigantic dragon watching over the ice bar, the 7-foot-tall suit of armour and the medieval style table and chairs carved completely from ice which look like they came straight from Winterfell. The Snow Village’s famous ‘ice slide’ is back for the young at heart and this year it is guarded by another one of the majestic Dragons.

There are also many other incredible artworks carved into the public areas and also the suites in the rest of the hotel. They include all manner of wildlife with frogs, owls, bears, a lion, a lynx and also some fish all making an appearance. There is also a small-scale princess castle which you can explore and of course the ice restaurant where your evening meal will be served.

Room types

Standard rooms

The standard rooms at the Snow Village are made from snice (a mixture of snow and ice) and carved into an igloo shape. The only decoration in these rooms is the bed frame made from ice. Regardless of the outside temperature, the rooms will stay between -2 and -5 Celsius due to the insulation from the rest of the hotel.

Very high-quality sleeping bags and fleece liners will be provided by a guide who will also advise on the best practice for sleeping and what you will need to wear to be as comfortable as possible during the night.  You will be provided with warm berry juice in the morning and can make use of the nearby communal (separate gender) shower and toilet facilities.

Snow Suites

These rooms have all the same features as the standard rooms but have been designed and decorated by one of a handful of artists and carved from the structure of the Snow Village. The design for each suite is completely unique and as the hotel is completely redesigned each year it is extremely limited edition!

For both room types, there are emergency warm sleeping facilities (a large dormitory-style room) just in case someone cannot spend the night in the ice room as planned. This is extremely, extremely unusual and is very much designed as a backup plan. The sleeping bags provided are wonderful quality and if you follow the guides instructions you will be very comfortable during the night. Toilet facilities are also located a short walk away in the warm area of the hotel. There are no toilet facilities in the cold areas.

A very well run operation. 03 February 2017 by Andrew and Deanna Cleaver

Huge thanks to all at The Aurora Zone for the trip of a lifetime 20 January 2017 by Kelli Bruzas & Carolo Kapp

After talking my requirements through with the team, I took all the recommendations offered by Andy. I treated my Father to this trip as a surprise for his 70th Birthday. The whole experience was faultless and amazing. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights too! The accommodation and food at the Santa Hotel were totally idyllic. Some of the best hotel food we have ever had. The excursions

were very well organised and brilliant. We did snowmobiling and the 5-hour husky ride. All the equipment provided was of top quality and not once we were we cold. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Aurora Zone for the first-class service received. Great job, experts in their field - thank you once again.
