Northern Lights Holidays to Kittila
Kittila is a typical and fully functional Finnish town, high up above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. For many it is used as a gateway to Lapland, as the airport if only five minutes away. There is so much to see and do in Kittila and those who simply get on and off a plane here are really missing out.
The town itself allows you to catch a glimpse of how daily life goes on in this remote region and how people cope with the wintry roads and weather – the answer is exceptionally well! It's a busy little town that is the largest for many miles, so it can be a hive of activity.Read more
There are some quirky little shops and supermarkets where you can stock up on souvenirs and things for the larder back home – it is inevitable that people leave Finland having acquired a taste for some of the local fayre.
We offer our guests the chance to stay at Hotel Kittila on the main street in the town. You may feel that this is a strange location for a wilderness multi-activity holiday but a five minute walk out of the town leads you to the wilderness which stretches for hundreds of kilometres. Kittila is a small oasis of civilisation in a sea of wild fells and forests – it is a very special place. Over Christmas and New Year the hotel attracts our guests, as it provides a relatively adult only haven amidst what can be a very family orientated Lapland. The activities will be entirely for adults and there should be few if any children at the hotel. The hotel is a real hub in the town and so there is no better place than Pilot's Bar or the restaurant here to get to know the locals and really feel like you are part of the community. This is heightened over the festive period. The welcome here is fabulous and the guides without fail achieve exceptional feedback from our clients.
Around 20 kms from Kittila is the ski resort of Levi, the largest and most well known in Finland and a bus links the town and the slopes so you can take to your skis during your free time if you wish. Levi offers a range of slopes for all skiers and there are many shops and restaurants in the resort itself.
One of the region's most famed attractions lies within easy reach of Kittila – and for good reason. Lainio Snow Village is a huge structure created purely from ice and snow. It is spectacular and every year the designs for the suites and rooms get more elaborate. The sculptures and art work that adorn the walls of the ice restaurant and bar become more breathtaking too. You can spend the night at Lainio during some of our winter activity holidays and you can find details under the customise section of the holiday pages.
