Northern Lights hunting
The biggest draw to our northern destinations is the Aurora viewing potential. To see the Northern Lights in their full glory, you need dark skies which is why our trips all operate during winter and in remote locations away from light pollution. Strictly speaking, it’s difficult to say the best time to see the Northern Lights because they are a naturally occurring phenomenon. However, in places like Finland they can be seen on up to 200 nights of the year!
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Aurora Borealis appears most frequently in a band just north of the Arctic Circle at approximately 66°N and 69°N. Essentially, regardless of whether solar activity is high, medium or low, this is where you have the best chance. Naturally, this is where we base all of our Northern Lights holidays in an area we call the Aurora Zone. In those destinations, we also work closely with local guides who know the area and provide innovative ways for you to go on the hunt for the Northern Lights.

The dark skies of December
In this part of the world, the Northern Lights appear year-round but it isn’t until the darker skies set in that you get the best chance to enjoy a light display. That is because they provide the longest window to experience the wondrously-green lights in all their glory. The Aurora Zone got its name from a band of the Arctic Circle that stretches from 66°N to 69°N over Northern Scandinavia and North America famed for its frequent and excellent Northern Lights displays.
All of our locations sit right in the middle of this band, meaning there is no better place to see the elusive Auroras. Not only do we use the best locations we also use our own unique Aurora hunting formula to tailor each and every one of our holidays to give you your best bet in nature’s lottery. So although the Northern Lights are never guaranteed, we really do give you the best possible chance of seeing them on your holiday.

December’s colours
The big freeze of winter is an incredible thing to see. You can almost imagine someone pulling a blanket of snow over the landscape and covering it with this mesmerising white powder.
Forget what you’ve heard about pitch-black 24 hours in Northern Scandinavia, though the sun may not break the horizon, the residual light from the snow creates an ethereal reflection.
This is a truly wonderful time of year where the daylight hours feel neither like day or night and instead, a greyish blue tint washes over the bright-white landscape. In late December these colours are even more prominent, so much so the locals call this time of year, ‘Blue Time’. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a real-life Christmas card during a Northern Lights holiday in December 2022.

We are blue in the face from telling anybody who will listen that autumn is an excellent time to search for the Aurora Borealis. Scientific research and findings from various esteemed Solar Physicists repeatedly point to increased geomagnetic activity (and hence, Auroral displays) in the weeks around the autumn and spring equinoxes.
The big question therefore, is; has this new aurora hunting season started well?
