Located on the cusp of the Arctic Circle and nestled on the edge of a frozen lake, Apukka provides the perfect base for snow-based activities as well as magical Aurora hunting. We were lucky enough to sample a variety of Apukka’s brilliant activities, which range from thrilling snowmobile safaris to gentle reindeer rides. At Apukka there is truly something for everyone.
Our first night saw us all aboard the famous Apukka snow train – a unique way to hunt for the Northern Lights and explore the snowy landscape, whilst keeping cosy and sheltered in the heated sleigh. Although the clouds were stubborn that night, I have fond memories of sitting around the campfire with a delicious steaming hot berry juice listening to our lovely guide Elina, who told fascinating stories of Finland and the myths and legends that surround the mysterious Northern Lights. Did you know that the Finnish word for Northern Lights is revontulet which translates to ‘fox fires’? Sámi legend has it that the Auroras were created by foxes running so fast across the tundra that their tails emitted sparks which flew up into the night sky, thus creating the enchanting Aurora.
On one of our free afternoons, we took advantage of the complimentary snowshoes and took to the frozen lake. As first-timers, it took a bit of time to figure out the best technique, but as soon as we did there was no stopping us. I still remember how deeply peaceful it was out on the lake, surrounded by fresh snow with not another soul around.
During our stay, we sampled the incredible Apukka’s glass-roofed Aurora Cabin accommodation. A particular highlight was watching the night sky from the comfort of our bed, the perfect spot for some Northern Lights viewing.
It was an all-round unforgettable experience and I cannot wait to return!
