Right now, I would love to be walking across the striking black sand beaches at Vik, or gazing upon one of the waterfalls on the south coast, or relaxing in a café in the cool, urban centre of Reykjavik. I want to be chatting with the friendly Icelanders; taking in their Viking history, or standing in a remote lava field gazing up at the Northern Lights.
During my first visit there we drove around the island - the whole place just astonished me. It is the natural beauty of Iceland that truly captured my heart – the bright azure of the blue lagoon, the towering mountains, and moss-topped lava fields. When I think of Iceland I recall the unforgettable scenery, as well as the ever-changing weather! On one day of our trip, we drove for two hours, we left in a snowstorm and arrived under a bright sun in a clear sky. I’ve yet to have a trip where my trusty yellow raincoat gets as much use as my sunglasses.
My second visit to Iceland was on my honeymoon (really, where else could I choose?) and my husband now loves it as much as I do. It might not be a place that immediately screams honeymoon destination, but it comes with our highest recommendation. Our itinerary was rich and unforgettable: together we did a food tour, went horse riding, snorkelled at Thingvellir, trekked past waterfalls, and spent a day soaking at the magical Blue Lagoon. It is truly the most wonderful island!
