If you are seeking a peaceful holiday to unwind, don't just go off-the-beaten-track, travel out of season to uncover one of the best-kept secrets of Northern Lights hunting; autumn! Autumn is one of the best times of year to see the Northern Lights, however, it is often overlooked in favour of the snowy winter months.

There are a number of reasons why travelling in autumn could be the right time for you, and every year our team has huge success chasing the Northern Lights in both September and October. Solar activity, which causes the phenomena, is believed to increase in the weeks surrounding the equinox (you can read more about the science behind this here). Another reason to travel in autumn is the milder weather and warmer temperatures of these months which often results in clearer skies with less snow cloud cover, as well as a more comfortable wait for the Aurora Borealis to appear. Not to mention the kaleidoscope of colours that can be seen, both in the stunning autumnal surrounding nature and the incredible Aurora displays as they are reflected off the open water of the unfrozen lakes.

Here are our top picks for an autumn break in 2020:

Saariselkä - Glass Igloo Escape in Autumn- 4 nights

Located in North-East Finland, the Northern Lights Village sits on the outskirts of the ski resort of Saariselkä. Tucked away from the town and separated by dense forest, it is a perfect location for Northern Lights hunting. The main attraction of Northern Lights Village is the Aurora cabins. These glass-roofed cabins are designed for optimal Northern Lights viewing, perfect for watching the night sky to catch your own auroral display from the comfort of your bed! This 4-night break is also ideal to try some thrilling Scandinavian activities, including husky sledding on wheels or a hike through the beautiful national park. The evening activities include many opportunities to hunt for the Northern Lights, with experts on hand to provide photography advice and set up camp under the dark skies.

Muotka is located close to Urho Kekkonen National Park, the fellside location means the colours of “Ruska”, the Finnish Fall, are particularly stunning during the autumn season. The rural location makes it perfect for Northern Lights hunting away from any light pollution.

The daytime agenda is all about new skills and experiences. You will explore the autumnal landscape during the guided nature walk, you may even be lucky enough to spot some reindeer! A visit to the Siida museum is also included, where you will learn about the fascinating culture of the indigenous people. In the evenings, you will take part in three dedicated Northern Lights hunts. This will start with gaining insight into the science behind the Aurora from a knowledgeable, local guide who will then lead the way to prime viewing locations.

At night, you will go on dedicated Northern Lights hunts into the wilderness. Lake Menesjärvi is a beautiful location to experience a Northern Light display, the local experts will be on hand to help you catch the perfect photo, taking full advantage of the lake’s reflections.

During the day, you will be able to meet the animals of the Arctic when you visit both a reindeer and husky farm, allowing you to gain an authentic insight into why these animals are so special to this part of the world. You can also learn even more about the culture during a visit to the Sámi Siida Museum.
