The good people at Apukka in Finnish Lapland have come up with an innovative solution to the challenge presented by the cold. I’m sure that other suppliers will follow their lead but, as far as I am aware, this is the very first place to provide a heated Aurora Train.
This is a really, really clever concept. The Aurora Train consists of a large enclosed sleigh which is heated and has large glass windows. This serves three purposes.
Firstly, the train allows you to study the night sky while keeping a keen eye out for any signs of shimmering lights appearing out of the darkness.
Secondly, the carriage is pulled by a snowmobile which is driven by a wilderness guide who also just happens to be an expert on pretty much all things auroral. The beauty of the snowmobile is that you have mobility which will hopefully allow you to escape any Aurora-obscuring cloud cover. The great thing about your guide is that he or she knows all the best vantage points locally.
Thirdly, you stay warm. Most people really appreciate being warm!
There are folk who are understandably reticent about venturing out into the sub-zero temperatures of the snowy Lappish wilds. The Aurora Train very cleverly overcomes this issue whilst creating some excellent chances to see the Northern Lights.
