Here at the Aurora Zone, we’ve never really adhered to the theory that you can’t see the Northern Lights when there is a full moon but the sky tonight might put that belief to the test.
After sunset this evening, Europe’s sky will be treated to the largest full moon in 70 years and, with a reasonable Aurora forecast for this evening, there’s a strong likelihood that the battle between lunar and solar light will be a fierce one. We’re all for escaping artificial light pollution but have always held that a full moon has little negative impact on all but the weakest of Auroral displays.
Tonight could be different and we’ll be watching the skies with eager eyes to see whether this “Super Moon” can indeed dull the Northern Lights.
It should be an extremely interesting evening and we’ll be eager to see what we can add to our gallery of the Northern Lights with a full moon.
